CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ? The Associated Press will be among 16 news organizations and Internet entrepreneurs sharing $4.7 million in funding to design innovative ways to find and deliver news in the digital age.
The funding, announced Wednesday, came through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's Knight News Challenge.
The AP's grant will fund a project to help journalists mine large documents for stories. The system, called Overview, will create an interactive, visual display that maps out frequently occurring keywords and shows the relationship between topics, people, places and dates.
In a proof of concept, Overview scanned 400,000 documents from the Iraq war logs and plotted each incident as a colored dot. The dots were clustered based on shared keywords, such as "blindfolded" and "handcuffed." The resulting image quickly highlighted certain themes that guided further exploration.
Knight said the project will get $475,000 over two years.
The AP plans to share its tool with other news organizations, groups and individuals.
AP Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll said such a tool would be useful for journalists to analyze data obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests.
"A tool that helps make sense of the material in those caches will help journalists and citizens alike better understand the world," she said.
Among other grants awarded:
? $150,000 to create Panda, from the Chicago Tribune, Investigative Reporters and Editors and The Spokesman-Review of Spokane, Wash. The set of Web-based tools, like Overview, will seek to find relationships within large data sets.
? $320,000 to develop a new feature on the Investigative Reporters and Editors' DocumentCloud, a project the Knight News Challenge funded in 2009 to help journalists analyze and share documents online. The new feature will allow newsrooms to invite readers to help pore through and comment on such documents.
Other projects that received funding include iWitness, which a company called Adaptive Path is developing to collect user-generated content over social media during big news events. A nonprofit group, Media and Place Productions, won a grant to build Zeega to help people make multimedia presentations.
Also funded is NextDrop, a system that will inform residents of Hubli city in the Indian state of Karnataka when valves controlling the infrequent flow of water are opened. The project comes from students at Berkeley and Stanford.
Over the five years of the Knight News Challenge, the Knight Foundation has reviewed more than 12,000 applications and funded 76 projects for $27 million. This year, Google Inc. contributed $1 million in funding but was not involved in picking winners.

It's no secret that studying for a test is a great way to prepare, and most people willingly accept the fact that, in order to do your best, you have to put a pretty decent amount of effort into your studying and preparation in order to make a score that you will be happy to see. Unfortunately, sometimes simply studying is not enough.
You can sit there for weeks studying the basic information that you believe will be on the exam only to find yourself performing poorly on the bad day. It may not be because you failed to prepare, but it may be due to the fact you failed to prepare correctly. See, when you take one of these exams you will be expected not only to know the material, but be able to take the information and apply it to the questions that they will be asking you and to do it in a very short amount of time.
To be able to do this, you will need to have some very concise strategies at your disposal, strategies that make sure that you can find the correct answer in enough time to keep you from falling behind on the exam. It's difficult, though, to be able to learn to do these things on your own without some form of help. This is where things such as the SPI test preparation system really come in handy in saving your score.
There are systems out there that are designed just to help you make sure you are really prepared.
These systems put an emphasis not just on making sure that you have all of the proper knowledge that you will need, but that you know how to apply that knowledge in a pattern that is specific to the test that you will be taking. The strategies they help you develop are designed just to make sure that you do well on the examination.
It's really up to you how well you do on your exam. While you do not have direct control over the test and what material it will cover, you can undergo a preparation regiment that makes sure that you are as prepared as you could ever be for what the test might throw your way. You need a tool like SPI test preparation system to make sure that you really have all of the cognitive equipment necessary to make it through the exam and have the score you need.
Getting some SPI Test Preparation before you take the actual examination in order to score to your full potential.

BEIRUT ? Defying government guns, thousands of Syrian protesters poured down city streets and a main highway Friday to press demands for President Bashar Assad's ouster. Security forces opened fire, killing at least 15 people, including two children, activists said.
"Our revolution is strong! Assad has lost legitimacy!" a YouTube video showed protesters chanting in Zabadani, a suburb of Damascus, the Syrian capital.
Syria's streets have become the stage for a test of endurance between a 3-month-old pro-democracy movement, bloodied but resilient, and an iron-fisted but embattled regime. The latest round of protests and killings came as international pressure mounted on Assad.
"We will not stand by while the Syrian regime uses violent repression to silence its own people," British Foreign Secretary William Hague said after the European Union expanded sanctions ? asset freezes and travel bans ? to more members of the Syrian leadership.
The Syrian opposition says 1,400 people have been killed as the government has cracked down on a movement demanding an end to four decades of Assad family rule ? a popular uprising renewed each Friday after weekly Muslim prayers.
Five people were killed by security forces' gunfire this Friday in Barzeh, a Damascus district 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the city center, said the Local Coordination Committees, which track the protests. But Syrian state television offered another version, saying gunmen, otherwise unidentified, had opened fire on security personnel and civilians, killing three civilians and wounding several security force members.
Five other fatalities occurred in al-Kasweh, a suburb of the capital; four in the central city of Homs, and one in Hama, also in central Syria, said the Local Coordination Committees (LCC). Protests in several other provinces also came under fire but it was not immediately clear whether there were casualties, said LCC spokesman Omar Idilbi.
The group said the deaths included a 12-year-old boy, Rateb al-Orabi, killed when security forces fired on protesters in the Shammas neighborhood in Homs, and a 13-year old boy in al-Kasweh. The reports could not be independently verified.
In northern Syria, activists said at least 15,000 people staged a protest along the highway linking the country's two main cities, Damascus and Aleppo. Thousands marched in Amouda and Qamishli in the northeast and in other provinces, said Syria-based human rights activist Mustafa Osso.
Osso and the LCC both reported a few soldiers defected in al-Kasweh after security forces shot at protesters, resulting in a shootout between loyal soldiers and defectors. Syrian TV swiftly denied the mutiny report, saying the army wasn't even inside al-Kasweh Friday.
The report from Osso, which he said came from protesters and other area residents, could not be independently verified.
In Hama, activists said, a massive protest took place in the city's main Assi square. Online footage showed huge numbers of people gathered, many waving Syrian flags and crying for the regime's downfall. A large purple banner was unfurled over a building, reading: "Long live free Syria, down with Bashar Assad."
The video and other reports from inside Syria could not otherwise be confirmed, since the Damascus government has banned all but a few foreign journalists and restricted local media's reporting.
In a speech last Monday, Assad said the disruptive protests threatened to damage the Syrian economy. For now, he can count on the support of Syria's small but growing middle class, which has seen life gradually improve since he began opening up the economy. But if the economy crumbles, Assad could find his main base of support eroding swiftly.
"The economic problems Syria is facing are a direct and predictable consequence of the Syrian authorities' decision to chose repression over reform," Britain's Hague said.
The military's recent sweep through northwestern Syria, where armed resistance flared in early June, has sent more than 11,000 refugees fleeing across the border to refugee camps in Turkey.
Osso said those who did not flee on Thursday, as Syrian troops advanced right to the Turkish border, were arrested ? some 100 over the past two days.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters Friday he had conveyed Turkey's "concerns and thoughts" about the border-area military operation in a telephone conversation with his Syrian counterpart on Thursday.
He said he would continue to talk to Syrian officials to ensure that "reforms and peace are brought about as soon as possible."
"We hope that Syria is successful in renewing itself in a stable manner and comes out of the situation stronger. We will do all that we can to help," he said.

An hour outside of Amsterdam in Dordrecht, Netherlands, a ship is under construction. But this ain't your typical sailboat, bub. Johan Huibers is building a full-scale replica of Noah's ark.
Yes, that Noah's ark. And Johan, an expert builder, isn't skimping on the details. The ship, which he's been constructing for the past three years, is built to biblical specs. Johan culled information on the ark's size and shape directly from the good book. In the end, the ship is four stories high and the length of a football field. And yes, it's seaworthy.
The result is an incredibly impressive ship, especially considering it was realized simply by a man with a dream--or, perhaps, a nightmare. According to an interview with NBC's "The Today Show," Johan dreamt that Holland suffered a great flood. The next morning, he woke up determined to start preparing for that worst-case scenario.
The ship, which is not to be confused with the theme park in Kentucky that also honors Noah's ark, is generating a lot of interest in the search box. Over the past 24 hours, online lookups for "noah's ark photos" and "noah's ark real ship" have surged.
As for the craft proper, it's not complete yet, but it's getting close. The master plan is to sail the ship up the Thames in time for the London Olympics next year. Expect to see plenty of life-size plastic animals aboard (two of each type, of course).

Joe Jonas is not recording music with his brothers these days. (Listen to his first solo track, "See No More," HERE.)
But he makes one thing clear in the latest issue of Paper Magazine: the singer is still very close with siblings Nick and Kevin.
"My brothers and I, we're like each other's best friends," he says. "And I think it's that foundation that makes me feel like I can really do this on my own for a second."
Jonas is also hoping to follow in the crazy talented footsteps of another teen idol who has risen to superstardom outside his original boy group: Justin Timberlake.
"He's absolutely an inspiration," Jonas tells the magazine. "I look up to Justin so much. He pretty much created his own lane."
On his solo album, Joe worked with Nate "Danja" Hills, a frequent Britney Spears collaborator. Says the producer:
"There's such a gap between what I do and what the Jonas Brothers are. But that's the excitement - it left us an opportunity to create something new... [his fans have all grown up with Joe, so they'll be able to understand where he's coming from. And, really, he's a star no matter what he does. If I give him something people can move to on top of his natural charisma, that's like dynamite and gasoline."

After my husband, Casey, and I got married, I grew tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs on our apartment's balcony. By the time we'd had three children, we were renting a 725-square-foot house. As anyone with a large family can attest, making ends meet can be tough.

08:16 AM ET?06.21 | Would you like to know how easy it is to commit a rules violation? Joe Paterno was taking a leisurely stroll on the Penn State campus last week when he did the unthinkable: He broke an NCAA rule "without even thinking about it," the longtime Nittany Lions coach said. ... Passing by Holuba Hall, where several football players were conducting unsupervised workouts, Paterno stopped to watch for a few minutes without speaking to anyone, he said. Suitably impressed, he returned to his office where he reported to the coaching staff that at least one player had looked good and caught his eye. "You know you broke a rule?" someone said, pointing out that coaches aren't permitted to watch players working out before the start of practice in August. Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson said the university will report the incident to the NCAA.

Wild sexual antics, bear suits and chainsaws, that's what theatergoers in Santa Monica got on Saturday night, July 18, as New York's famed once-a-year theater experience called "The 24 Hour Plays" came West for the first time.
The conceit is simple, as the producers tell it: "a one of a kind theater experience where six short plays are written, rehearsed, directed and performed in a 24 hour period." It's the cause that's complicated, as for the past ten years, the 24 Hour Plays have put on these special shows to benefit the Urban Arts Partnership, the organization devoted to funding arts programs in public schools. Sponsored for the past five years by Montblanc, the all-for-charity hot ticket was $250, which included a pre-party, the show held at the Eli Broad Stage in Santa Monica and a star-studded after party at Pier 59.
It all went for a great cause, and where else can you see Eva Mendes dancing on stage in a pumpkin costume and Adam Brody spending quality time in a bear outfit? There was all that and more, during the show that Montblanc president and CEO Jan-Patrick Schmitz called "one of the most interesting and energetic things I have ever seen!"
Brody even joined the band, the alt-rock group the 88, dressed as the bear, doing a quick keyboard riff after cracking up the house in "Roar, a Love Story," along with "How I Met Your Mother" beauty Jennifer Morrison, "30 Rock" jokester Jack McBrayer and "One Tree Hill" hottie Austin Nichols.
Hilarity reigned throughout the whole first half of the show, as morgue worker Saffron Burrows wielded a chainsaw while going after "Dr. Who" star Matt Smith, who happened to be dressed as Batman to Nick Swardson's Robin. Their "Gotham Autopsy" skit was funny enough, but when the actors forgot their lines and Smith yelled to the audience, "Does anyone have Batman's high concept tag line?" the crowd just lost it.
Going up on their lines is all in the day for the actors in the 24 Hour Plays, since the script had only been written the night before, and rehearsed once on the day of the show. It means the thespians have to really work hard, like they did in "Freak Flag," as "Sex and the City" star David Eigenberg appropriately played the sex-crazed leader of a self-help group. The gals of "Community" (gorgeous Gillian Jacobs and Yvette Nicole Brown) played right up to his weakness, and, in a sight gag that brought the house down, the usually serious "Fantastic Four" star Ioan Gruffudd strutted on stage wearing just a bright yellow, itty bitty women's bikini. The visuals were priceless, but as the organizers explained, no one will ever see it.
"This is only for us, no recording, no nothing," production director Philip Naude insisted. "It is a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience art in its essence."
Once the audience got re-lubricated on Svedka vodka and Chandon champagne at intermission it was time for more, as Sophia Bush, Zachary Levi, David Krumholtz and Saverio Guerra skewered Hollywood studio execs in "First Pitch." But it was Nia Vardalos who stole that piece, as a gum-popping secretary without much to say but a lot of physical action.
"I couldn't be at rehearsal today, so they let me do that walk-on," Vardalos explained later. "I've done it on Broadway, too, so fun!"
Rosie Perez, Raven-Symone, Cam Gigandet, Andre Royo and Urban Arts scholarship winner Frank Turiano got more serious in "Father's Day," but then the big fun finale, "And Maybe Everyone Just Dances" brought the cheering crowd to their feet, as Eva Mendes wiggled around in that pumpkin costume, Leslie Bibb acted perky and Jenna Elfman and Amaury Nolasco pretended to be grumpy.
But there was no pretending at the after party, as everyone happily agreed that the 24 Hour Plays first foray into Hollywood (by way of Santa Monica) was a rousing success and then immediately began discussing next year's show.
"It's a great start to our next journey," said Schmitz, the man who writes the Montblanc checks that help to keep the show going year after year. "We're so happy to be helping to bring arts education to L.A.!"

See More Yahoo! Contributor Network StoriesJUBA, Sudan (Reuters) ? The United Nations on Tuesday called for southern Sudan to halve the size of its army after independence in July, saying its mix of conflicting loyalties and former rebels could lead to insecurity.
Southern Sudan voted in January to separate from the north and form a new nation in a referendum provided by a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war in Sudan, which claimed 2 million lives and destabilized much of the region.
Since the peace deal, the former rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) has prepared to become a national army, absorbing various militia groups and fighters while disarming and demobilizing others.
David Gressly, the United Nations regional coordinator for Southern Sudan, told Reuters in an interview that the SPLA had between 150,000 and 200,000 soldiers, and that "probably more" than half should be demobilized after secession.
"This is an army that has absorbed a large number of groups since 2005, I would say over 20 to 25 groups have come on board, so (there are) varying degrees of loyalty as well as discipline," Gressly said.
"There's no need for it. You can have a more effective army that's smaller than a larger army that is not as professional as it could be. They'd be better off with a better trained and a smaller army."
After a lull in violence around the historic vote, the region erupted in south-on-south fighting. The United Nations says more than 1,500 people have been killed this year, many as rogue SPLA soldiers turned on the army.
Gressly said once the south declares independence in less than three weeks, the SPLA can receive more external help and training for its forces.
"The key now is to look at how to demobilize the large numbers so you retain a core group where focus can be placed to professionalize them as an army."
The call to halve the south's armed forces may unsettle some southerners as ongoing north-south tensions continue along the border, with some analysts warning of a return to open conflict over the contested Abyei region. Gressly said demobilizing half of the army in stages would improve its quality over time.
A deal to demilitarize Abyei was struck between northern and southern leaders Monday, despite reports of shelling and fighting between both sides at the southern reaches of the Abyei area as late as Friday.
"The important thing is the (Abyei) agreement itself," Gressly said.
"I'm not surprised to hear there may be some skirmishes, but the fact that the agreement has been signed, that there will be a withdrawal of forces and a new security force under U.N. command will move into Abyei, is a significant step forward."

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? More than fifteen Chinese companies whose shares trade in the United States, many of them favored by short-sellers, have yet to file required year-end forms with U.S. regulators and the shares could face more downward pressure as deadlines approach.
Many of those names were included on lists issued by brokerages that prevented their clients from borrowing money to buy those stocks on margin. A rise in short activity indicates more people see the stocks falling amid a flurry of accounting scandals that have damaged the sector.
Some of these companies, if they are foreign issuers, would be required to file a 20-F report with the Securities and Exchange Commission by the end of June if their fiscal year ended December 31. Others that are considered U.S. companies have already delayed certain filings.
Short-sellers, who borrow stocks in anticipation they can sell them and then buy them back at a lower price, have been champing at the bit waiting for bad news from those that have not filed reports. They got some on Wednesday with one company, China-Biotics Inc (CHBT.O), after it said it would not file its annual report on time, citing "serious issues" raised by its auditors.
"If there are any China names where there is any sense that there is stuff out there on them or there are concerns ... getting a 10-K signed on these names is not easy," said Roddy Boyd, editor of thefinancialinvestigator.com in Wilmington, North Carolina, a website that focuses on Chinese companies.
The 20-F form is a foreign issuer's version of a 10-K, which much be filed within six months of the end of the company's fiscal year.
Trading in shares of China-Biotics, the latest in a string of Chinese companies to disclose accounting issues in recent months, was halted after tumbling on Wednesday and has not traded since.
Bets against Chinese names have grown recently, with average short interest in about 80 Chinese companies traded on U.S. exchanges rising to 3.99 percent on January 3, the first trading day of the year, and climbing to 5.92 percent as of June 13, according to data provided by Data Explorers.
"At this point, if a company is borderline on the sniff test, investors will try to leverage into it by shorting the position as it goes as low as possible, if not to zero," said Joseph Greco, managing director at Meridian Equity Partners in New York.
AutoChina International Ltd (AUTC.O), a Shijiazhuang-based commercial vehicle financing company with a market cap of more than $540 million, is among the companies that have not filed the 20-F form, due June 30.
Interest in shorting AutoChina has risen recently, with more than 85 percent of shares available to be borrowed out on loan, according to Data Explorers, compared with 57.6 percent on May 23 and less than 5 percent in early March. The stock is down 30 percent since a recent high reached on March 10.
Jason Wang, the company's chief financial officer, said he was aware the deadline was approaching but directed all further queries to the company's investor relations contact, who was out of the country and did not immediately return a request for a comment.
Concord Medical Services Holdings Limited (CCM.N) and eLong Inc (LONG.O) are also among the companies with market capitalizations above $100 million that have yet to file. Both are foreign issuers, so should be filing form 20-F by the end of June. Concord's investor relations representative confirmed the deadline but eLong was not immediately available to comment.
Investors have been more guarded over China since Sino-Forest Corp (TRE.TO) was recently accused of fraud by short-selling research firm Muddy Waters in a report that sparked a drop of more than 80 percent in the company's shares even as it denied the charges.
Those high-profile allegations followed a number of similar charges against other Chinese names, which have led to delistings and steep stock drops.
On Thursday, shares of electric motor maker Harbin Electric (HRBN.O) more than halved after Citron Research raised concerns about a go-private offer from Harbin CEO Tianfu Yang. Harbin said the short-seller's report was "factually inaccurate," and the stock climbed 22 percent to $8.50 on Friday.
As a result of the growing controversies, Interactive Brokers Group (IBKR.O) joined other brokers in barring its clients from buying more than 160 Chinese securities on margin, citing risk concerns.
The SEC followed by issuing a bulletin of risk against investing in reverse merger companies, a category that includes many of the firms that have yet to file with the regulator.
While shares of many foreign companies traded on U.S. exchanges rose on Friday after France and Germany said they reached an outline agreement to aid debt-burdened Greece, Chinese stocks suffered another day of losses.
The BNY Mellon index of leading American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) (.BKADR) rose 0.7 percent, while the Asian index (.BKAS) fell 0.2 percent and the China index (.BKCN) dropped 0.3 percent.
"Many traders are looking for a compounding effect given the downturn in the broader market," Meridian Equity's Greco said.

?I've been in Aspen long enough to know the truism, ?to delay is to deny,' ? Ireland said, in reference to one speaker's idea that the city should switch gears and explore other ways of tackling the project.
?I think there are opponents of this project who absolutely, under no circumstance, want to see it happen. The strategy in Aspen has traditionally been, ?Well, we'll get a new council in two years and we'll get a new outcome.' And we have had things in Aspen that should have been done 30 or 40 years ago because of the strategy of delay.?
Ireland and others were participating in ?Hydropower in Aspen? at the Aspen Institute's Paepcke Building. The presentation and panel discussion, which allowed questions from the audience, was hosted by the Western Rivers Institute, a Carbondale-based nonprofit that advocates healthy rivers and ecologically responsible development of hydropower.
Ireland's comments about opponents seeking to delay the project followed remarks by Richard Roos-Collins, an attorney with California-based Water and Power Law Group PC. For more than two decades he has represented agencies, nonprofits and others in resource-management cases.
Roos-Collins said the route the city is taking to apply for Federal Energy Regulatory Commission permission to create a hydro plant ? a process that solicits comments for and against the initiative ? commonly creates an ?us [versus] them dynamic.?
?What if Aspen did something different? What if Aspen affirmatively encouraged alternative designs to be brought forward, before committing to a particular proposal? It's almost never done. It would be a very significant reform in how hydropower is designed, built and regulated, and it might result in a better project,? he said.
Roos-Collins mentioned a nonprofit organization in Portland, Maine: The Low Impact Hydropower Institute. It seeks participation in a voluntary program designed to certify and reward hydro projects that reduce their environmental impacts based on specific criteria.
?[Low Impact Hydropower Institute's] mission is to reduce the impacts of hydropower dams through market incentives,? the nonprofit's website states. ?LIHI does this through its Hydropower Certification Program, a voluntary certification program designed to help identify and reward hydropower dams that are minimizing their environmental impacts. Just as an organic label can help consumers choose the foods and farming practices they want to support, the LIHI certification program can help energy consumers choose the energy and hydropower practices they want to support.?
Roos-Collins said the program is just one example of ?the kind of ingenuity that I think is really advisable in this process.?
Asked how he felt about such an idea, Ireland said he wasn't familiar with it, and he wasn't sure what the program would entail.
?I don't know,? Ireland said. ?Somebody would have to describe it in detail, not here on a stage. [It's like asking,] ?What do you think of healthcare in Massachusetts? You have 30 seconds.' I just went through that process. It's called an election.?
Earlier in the forum, Ireland said the city's plans respect the ecosystems of Castle and Maroon creeks. He said the renewable-energy project will be another way in which Aspen sets an example for other communities by working to reduce the carbon footprint and its dependency on coal-generated power.
The city in late April announced a change with regard to its plan for the Castle Creek hydroelectric facility. In a special meeting, the Aspen City Council voted to withdraw its request for a ?conduit exemption? from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). That exemption would have allowed the city to move forward on the hydro plant without doing a full-blown environmental assessment on the project and its effect on local stream flows, ecosystems and surrounding areas.
Instead, the city will seek a license for a ?minor water power project,? a designation that likely will require a more stringent environmental review and greater federal oversight of the plant. City officials cited the need for more support from environmental, community and governmental groups as a reason for the change in direction. The city achieved some of that support during a closed-door mediation session at the Aspen Institute in March.
Despite the city's change in plans to obtain a license that will require more stringent environmental reviews, some of the speakers at Thursday's forum spoke of working toward a higher ?gold standard? of protection for the Castle Creek ecosystem.
Other participants in the forum included David Hornbacher, the city's new director of utilities; John Emerick, a retired professor from the Colorado School of Mines; Cynthia Covell, an attorney for the city who specializes in water law; and Matt Rice, who leads the conservation program for the group American Rivers.

Those with Chinese in-laws will instantaneously know what the title of the post means. Close family ties are a key feature of Chinese culture. Most Chinese parents will gasp at the idea of their kids moving out unless they relocate to a different place. And they tend to stay very involved in their children?s? lives throughout their existence. The one-child policy brings the old tradition to a new height as parental attention is concentrated onto one kid. And it carries on even when the child is married, and especially after a grand child is born. The attention multiplies and shifts to the precious new one.
In China, grandparents have increasingly become primary caretakers of their grandchildren. Traditional family values provide the underlying basis. But some recent social and demographic developments have also greatly contributed to the situation. One major reason is that most Chinese women go back to work after having a child, leaving a void at home. A lot of middle class parents hire a full time nanny to take care of the baby while they work. I am included in this group. However, there are many more parents who don?t have the resources to do so or are unwillingly to hire a stranger to be their baby?s primary caretaker. Grandparents naturally come to the rescue. And most Chinese grandparents see child rearing as a key duty of being grandparents. They are willing to perform tasks usually done by the parents.
It?s even common for Chinese kids to live with their grandparents instead of their own parents. In fact, most of my friends and relatives with young children have made such arrangements. They only take the kids home on weekends. During the week, they visit a few times. I can?t imagine spending so much time away from my kid. But that seems to be the most practical solution for many people. I think this touches on a fundamental difference between Chinese and North American culture. It?s that after a child is born, the Chinese family completely readjusts their life for the kid, though sometimes not in the kid?s best interest. Parents and grandparents tend to see care giving as the most important aspect of bringing up a child. And it?s understandable because they often have limited financial options. We are at the lowest level of Maslow?s hierarchy of needs for child raising.? But it seems even people who have means choose this approach as well. Taking my cousin for example, he and his wife left their daughter under his parents? care since she was born because both had to work to provide for the family. But as the kid grew up and their financial stability significantly improved, they continued the approach.? They chose preschool near the grandparents? home, and now looking at elementary school nearby. Their daughter will probably spend her entire childhood living with her grandparents. And many people do the same thing. Therefore in China, parenting is in fact ?grandparenting?.
A major cause of ?grandparenting? is the one child policy which allows both sets of grandparents to have time and resources to care for one grand child. I was raised primarily by my parents, even though they both had to work. They asked a neighbor to look after me before I was enrolled in preschool. In their days, people did not have grandparents to rely on since they had siblings who also had children. Grandparents could not possibly care for all of them. But of course, many families back then prioritized sons and grandsons. Now the supply and demand dynamic has switched. There are abundant supply of grandparents. Two sets of grandparents often fight over who become primary caregivers. Often the ones with more financial resources and live closer to good schools win.
I often feel Chinese parents have the strongest can-do spirit. They believe that if they work hard and provide the best things for their children, they will most likely to succeed.? And most Chinese parents spend their lives trying to do so. You might think they have paid their dues but as soon as a grandchild is born, they are sucked into the old parenting cycle again.? No wonder Tiger Mom Amy Chua concludes that Chinese parents think their children owe their lives to them. Rightly so.
