Restaurant Industry: Some news on driverless autos and auto ...

In the movie Minority Report, Stephen Spielberg has an extended sequence showing cars of the future being assembled and how they drive themselves. It's pleasing how well a film made some ten years ago has been predicting the future. The multitouch computer interfaces are here as are the retina scanners. Facial recognition software is routinely used at airports and other safety-critical locations, and we are now carrying pads around on which we can read the latest newspapers and books. Strangely enough, the driverless vehicles are also on our streets being tested. That might surprise you. Except the states of California and Nevada have already passed laws making it legal to have these vehicles drive you. So what's the problem?

In a sense, we have most of the technology already available off-the-shelf. Cameras can be fitted to give 360 degree vision. Radar can tell the vehicle when anything else is moving nearby. GPS transponders tell the vehicle exactly where it is. Computers can easily be configured to talk to each other so that each vehicle can be told when there's something else nearby on the road. We have voice recognition software which will allow owners to input the desired destination and route preferences. Many of the standard vehicles are already drive-by-wire, i.e. electronic rather than mechanical links to the accelerator, brakes, and so on. All we need are the software packages to interpret all this data and translate it into instructions for the vehicle. For the record, in March, Google announced that its driverless car has traveled over 200,000 miles on roads in all types of traffic conditions. There has not yet been an accident. Indeed, so confident is Google that it has begun discussions both with government and the insurance industry.

The theoretical advantages are enormous. A computer never takes its "eyes" off the road to answer a cell phone or comb its hair. It never drives too close to the vehicle in front. There's no reckless overtaking or speeding. If this technology was adopted across all our roads, the number and seriousness of traffic accidents would be significantly reduced. Given that more than 30,000 people are killed on our roads every year, this would be a major improvement. With the number of accidents falling, insurance costs would fall and premium rates could be reduced. Except we all know technology can break down. There's a world of difference between trusting the PC on your table at home to keep your personal information safe and allowing the same PC to drive you at 70 mph down a busy interstate.

It seems the discussions with the auto insurance industry have been going well because Google recently announced a more positive testing program for the software. Instead of this being ten or more years in the future, it has lost its speculative nature and could be approved in the next two or three years. The question for you as individual drivers is whether you will surrender your hands-on control to a computer in return for significant reductions in auto insurance rates . It's actually a very good deal and only dangerous if a few reckless people insist on continuing to drive themselves or it amuses hackers to take over vehicles and stage crashes.

Theater Review: 'Ghost The Musical' | Theatre | Arts & Entertainment ...

Both haunting and earthbound

Da?vine Joy Randolph, Richard Fleeshman, and Jeremy Davis appear in 'Ghost The Musical.' (Joan Marcus)

NEW YORK?The final scene of Ghost The Musical is wonderfully magical. Unfortunately, much of what comes before sacrifices intimacy for the big bang, as it were.

With a book and lyrics by Bruce Joel Rubin, music and lyrics by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard, and based on the Paramount Pictures film written by Bruce Joel Rubin, the stage show hews too close to the source material to establish its own identity.

Wall Streeter Sam (Richard Fleeshman) lives happily with his sculptress girlfriend Molly (Caissie Levy), though he is afraid to say ?I love you? to her. Molly has been able to overcome her own commitment issues, never wanting to get married until now. Looking on bemusedly is their best friend Carl (Bryce Pinkham), who works in the same firm as Sam.

\>");

The happy couple?s romance is cut short when Sam is killed in a robbery. Yet Sam finds he still exists as a ghost and is desperate to protect the stunned and grieving Molly.

Aided by storefront psychic Oda Mae Brown (Da?vine Joy Randolph) and a very angry Subway Ghost (Tyler McGee), Sam learns his death may not have been simply due to a random act of violence.

The musical paints a powerful message of the fragility of life. Sadly, the creative team seems to have forgotten that ?Ghost? is, at its heart, a love story, and all too often quiet moments are lost by adding unneeded bits of business.

For example, when Molly sings a haunting song about moving on, there are various people dancing in the background, blunting the emotional thrust of the number.

Elsewhere, the scene where Sam confronts his murderer (Michael Balderrama) is lit very dimly, with a screen between the audience and the actors, and so those watching are unable to see the reactions of either character.

Finally, Sam, after dying, is greeted by a Hospital Ghost (Lance Roberts), a touching moment which morphs into a song and dance number, destroying the horror Sam feels about what?s happened to him.

The show does take the art of special effects and projection to an entirely new level, making Sam?s spiritual ability to walk through walls and to disappear totally believable without distracting from the rest of the action.

The production is also able to perfectly capture the feeling of living in New York City, via excellent video work showing scenes of the skyline, Wall Street, and people running to and from their jobs?the last of these being both physical and projected.

Yet the show suffers from special effect?s overkill at times. In a love scene between Sam and Molly, images of their bodies intertwining are superimposed on them, as if not trusting the actors themselves to covey the emotions needed.

Fleeshman and Levy are excellent in their roles and one can certainly feel the romantic sparks between the characters. Fleeshman portrays Sam as a basically good man, determined to make things right even as he loses everything he holds dear.

Levy, meanwhile gives Molly a nicely earthy quality. The actress is also able to realistically deliver her musical numbers, ranging from songs about loss and yearning to ones of more happier times. The score itself, however, is completely forgettable.

Pinkham does a nice turn as Carl, someone who may know more about what?s happening than he initially lets on. Balderrama projects a menacing attitude as Sam?s killer and McGee has some very good moments as the Subway Ghost.

Randolph is fine as Oda Mae, but she often plays the character a bit too broadly, especially in a scene in Sam?s former office. She does have a great show-stopping number (?I?m Outta Here?), but one not necessary to the plot.

Direction by Matthew Warchus is okay as far as it goes, keeping the show moving nicely without any noticeable lags, but like Rubin?s script, his efforts fail to reach the heart of the material and make it soar.

The video and projection design work by Jon Driscoll is quite good and the illusions by Paul Kieve are wondrous to behold. Hugh Vanstone?s lighting and Bobby Aitken?s sound are both excellent, a good thing as this is one case where it is quite important for every technical aspect to come off entirely as planned.

?Ghost The Musical? has a wonderful love story at its center, but too many missteps distract from its ultimate message.

Also in the cast are Moya Angela, Carly Hughes, Jennifer Noble, Jason Babinsky, Jennifer Sanchez, Daniel J. Watts, Vasthy Mompoint, Alison Luff, Jeremy Davis, Sharona D?Ornellas, Josh Franklin, Albert Guerzon, Afra Hines, Joe Aaron Reid, Constantine Rousouli, and Daniel J. Watts.

Canadians split over NDP leader Thomas Mulcair?s opinion of Alberta?s oil sands: poll

OTTAWA ? A new poll suggests Canadians are roughly split over NDP Leader Tom Mulcair?s contention that the Alberta oil sands have given the country a case of Dutch Disease as he prepares to visit the province next week.

Mulcair has suggested the Alberta oil exports raise the value of the Canadian dollar, which in turn hurts the economy in other parts of the country.

The phenomenon is dubbed the ?Dutch Disease? in reference to the manufacturing decline that occurred in the Netherlands after a boom in natural gas exports in the 1970s.

The Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey suggests slightly more Canadians disagree than agree with Mulcair ? 45 per cent compared to 41 per cent ? although opinions varied across the country.

The telephone survey of just over 1,000 people was carried out between May 17 and 20 and has a margin of error of 3.1 per cent, 19 times out of 20.

Most people polled in oil-rich Alberta and the rest of the Prairies disagreed with the NDP leader, while those in Quebec and British Columbia were most likely to agree with him.

The poll indicates most people don?t share Mulcair?s sentiments in Ontario, the country?s manufacturing heartland, where the economy has been hard hit from the restructuring of the North American auto sector and other blue-collar industries.

But a study by the Canadian Energy Research Institute says Ontario enjoys the lion?s share of oil sands benefits outside Alberta. The Calgary-based think-tank has suggested the oil sands will create billions of dollars in economic spinoffs in Ontario and tens of thousands of jobs over the next quarter century.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and his Alberta counterpart Alison Redford got into a spat earlier this year over the same issue. When McGuinty said a strong oil sands industry means a high loonie that hurts the manufacturing and export sectors, Redford accused him of being too simplistic.

But Mulcair has insisted that statistics on manufacturing job losses are ?irrefutable?? and that ?everyone? agrees more than half of those losses are the direct result of the artificially high Canadian dollar created by booming energy exports, particularly from Alberta?s oil sands.

The federal Conservatives quickly pounced on Mulcair for suggesting the Alberta oil sands have given Canada a case of Dutch Disease. Cabinet ministers have accused the NDP leader of pitting region against region and insulting hard-working workers in the resource sector.

Mulcair?s views have also angered Redford and Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall. Redford has said she won?t meet with Mulcair until he visits the Fort McMurray region to educate himself about the oil sands.

The NDP leader?s office has confirmed Mulcair will visit the region May 30 and 31.

The poll suggests less than half of Canadians had heard about Mulcair?s comments. People from parts of the country most involved in the oil sands told pollsters they were most aware of what he said.

?Our survey suggests that those who have the most to lose if oil sands development were to be slowed as a means to assist other economic sectors are the ones paying the most attention to the ?Dutch Disease? debate,? said Doug Anderson, senior vice-president of Harris-Decima.

?On top of that, no region seems particularly convinced that oil sands development has been hurting exports of other sectors of Canada?s economy.?

There were few surprises along party lines.

The survey suggests 70 per cent of self-identified Conservative supporters polled either disagree or strongly disagree with Mulcair.

However, most Green party supporters also disagree with him ? with 56 per cent offside.

Liberal supporters were roughly split, with 48 per cent agreeing with Mulcair and 44 per cent disagreeing.

The poll indicates 55 per cent of New Democrat supporters share Mulcair?s view.

But the NDP leader?s assessment was most popular with Bloc Quebecois supporters. The survey suggests 64 per cent of Bloc supporters back his musings.

This is my grandfather, Larry and my Grandmother, Bettina, aka La Jolie Grandmere.

This picture was taken in the mid 1960s just after they married and built their home in the South of France.

Larry always looked at my grandmother as if she was the only one in the entire world...

They shared a love, respect and admiration most only dream...

He served our country. He piloted jet planes in the Second World War.?

He lived long enough to have an amazing career as a novelist and Hollywood producer for MGM Studios.

He lived long enough to meet and marry my grandmother later in life.

He was an amazing, adoring and doting husband, step-father and grandfather...

Among a myriad of accomplishments he was an avid tennis player. He played well until his 90s. He was 10 years older than my grandmother. She passed away nearly 10 years ago from a form of Leukemia.?

He passed away a few months later... from, I am quite certain, a broken heart.
But his life was long and rich and full...?

We must take a moment to thank all of those who have served our country and who are serving our country and to celebrate those who are no longer with us...

And especially those who never got to follow their dreams...

Who never met true loves... Who passed away much too young...

While we remember them, let's celebrate life and soak it all up!

I hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day filled with family, fun and?barbecues.

Siamdevil Susan B. Dopart, M.S., R.D., C.D.E.: 5 Myths About ...

When it comes to nutrition, sometimes it?s hard to tell the fact from the fiction. Certain foods get a reputation as ?bad for you,? whereas others get promoted as ?natural? or ?good for you? when they are really not.

Sometimes myths about foods are based on urban legends that just get perpetuated for years until we actually believe they are research-based. Other myths are based on old research that was not done in a scientific manner. Whatever the reason, here are some claims around a few popular foods that need to be debunked.

1. Cheese is bad for you

I hear this one every day of the week. The answer lies in the type of cheese you eat. There is packaged, processed cheese and then there is artisan/European and grass-fed cheese. The European/grass-fed cheese is higher in omega-3 fats (anti-inflammatory) fats that are good for you. Cheese is also a good source of protein and calcium. Eating cheese from cows that have been fed growth hormones and antibiotics, and that contains multiple ingredients, fits the myth and should be avoided. You can find imported European cheese in the deli section of your grocery store.

2. Eggs make your cholesterol go up

It?s beyond interesting to me that many people will avoid an egg yolk but will eat several packaged cookies during the day! Long-term studies found no relationship between egg consumption and heart disease. Studies do consistently link heart disease with a higher intake of trans fat, which is used in packaged foods to increase shelf life. However, the fat in eggs is mostly polyunsaturated and monounsaturated, and the yolk is an excellent source of the antioxidant lutein, which can lower certain inflammatory responses in the body. Eggs easily fit into a healthy lifestyle, so enjoy an omelet for breakfast and see how satisfied you are the rest of the day.

3. Drinking juice is healthy and a good way to get your fruit

Many people love their morning juice! But experts say drinking juice is equal to the same amount of sugar as drinking a glass of soda. Dr. Charles Billington, a researcher on obesity at the University of Minnesota, states that juice is ?pretty much the same as sugar water.? Think of all the oranges or apples you would have to squeeze to obtain a cup of juice. You are drinking all the sugar from the juice, minus the fiber that helps stabilize your blood sugar when eating the fruit. Skip the juice and eat a few pieces of fruit per day to improve your health.

4. Avoid avocados since they have too much fat

Avocados do contain fat, but it is the healthy monounsaturated kind, which does amazing things in your body. This is a food you want to include as part of your daily diet. Eating avocados can help with increasing the HDL (the happy kind of cholesterol), which you want higher since it helps with lowering heart disease by getting rid of bad cholesterol. Also, having healthy fats in your diet assists your health in multiple ways, including helping your skin and hair stay healthy and vibrant, providing adequate lubrication for the gut to help with normal digestion and absorption, and assisting with making hormones essential to the manufacture of sex hormones.

5. Agave is a natural sweetener

Agave, which comes from the cactus and has been used to make tequila, hit the market a few years ago. You can find agave as a sweetener in most products found in health food stores? but is it really a health product?

Using high-fructose corn syrup is a cheap way to sweeten foods. It was developed to help food companies cut costs. Whereas real sugar is 50 percent glucose and 50 percent fructose, high-fructose corn syrup is approximately 45 percent glucose and 55 fructose, and not the natural kind like in fruit. With agave, the percentages are altered more significantly ? the syrup is 85-90 percent fructose and 10-15 percent glucose. When you consume a large percentage of this type of fructose, it gets processed directly by your liver, which not only increases your triglyceride levels, but causes fatty liver, increased hunger levels and a plethora of other health issues you would rather avoid. The agave plant goes through heavy processing in order to concentrate it into a sweet syrup. Rather than being natural, as we?ve been led to believe, it is actually a processed food, often with few quality controls.

As with everything diet-related, moderation is key, but don?t be afraid to add European-style cheese, eggs and avocado to your shopping list. Drop the juice, add some fruit instead, and use honey instead of agave to sweeten your morning beverage. The result? A delicious, satisfying breakfast and a healthier you!

GOP Address: Rep. Jenkins Says 'We 'Owe Returning Services Members A Strong Economy'

US House of Representatives(WASHINGTON) -- Rep. Lynn Jenkins of Kansas delivers the Republican address this Memorial Day weekend honoring the fallen men and women of the U.S. Armed forces and praying "for our sons and daughters who are risking their lives so that we may live in freedom and security."

Jenkins underscores the importance of energizing the economy so that active duty men and women can return home with to opportunities to support themselves and their families.

"Of course, we owe it to our service members to do everything we can to ensure they come home to a strong, growing economy that creates jobs and opportunities," she says.

But with the rising costs of living and millions of Americans still out of work, Jenkins says "Americans are clamoring for optimistic leadership and a positive agenda to help get people back to work ?" She adds that the Republicans' Plan for America's Jobs Creators is what will get Americans working by focusing long-term growth instead of a "short-term stimulus" and on small businesses and not "big government."

Rep. Jenkins continues, offering up GOP-hatched solutions for job creation and economic growth, namely domestic energy projects such as the Keystone XL pipeline. ?

"An overwhelming majority of the American people and a bipartisan coalition in Congress supports Keystone, but right now it is stuck in a House-Senate conference committee due to opposition from the president and his allies in the Senate Democratic leadership," the congresswoman said, adding, "Republicans are holding strong for Keystone by insisting it should be included in any transportation legislation Congress send to President Obama."

Jenkins gave answer to the President Obama's recent proposed "To-Do List" and touted the benefits of removing costly red tape for small business owners, repealing the health care law and curbing federal spending.

"Through the Republican jobs plan, the House has voted to take these common-sense steps to sustained job growth and prosperity. Right now, there are 30 House-passed jobs bills awaiting action in the Democratic-controlled Senate, giving President Obama a serious to-do list to tackle," she said.

"Republicans continue to stand ready and willing to work with him on these priorities."

Venture Capital Investment Competition 2012 ? MBA Blogs ...

So the saying goes, ?if you tell me I will forget; if you show me I may remember; but if you involve me I will learn.? This has been especially true for all of the Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) team throughout this year?s competition. Bringing together key professional skills and enhancing business acumen, the 2012 VCIC has been the most rewarding part of the MBA course so far. The following summary discusses some of what has become clear to the team through our involvement in and reflection on all aspects of the experience. In short, the VCIC was an excellent learning experience, and very much in-line with the ?learning-by-doing? philosophy of Manchester Business School. And the socialising wasn?t bad either!

Beginning as far back as October 2011, our team, ultimately winning the ?Entrepreneurs? Choice? award at the European finals in Oxford, learned to quickly understand business propositions, evaluate whether they offered an investible business opportunity, if so then draft under what terms the investment should be made, and ultimately recommend how the entrepreneur should proceed.

A further key aspect of the competition was the opportunity to experience several pressurised negotiations with real-time entrepreneurs around a variety of business topics, and then receive specific feedback from both the entrepreneurs and judges at each stage of the competition. This was, perhaps, the most useful learning experience, helping to build skills that are applicable to all areas of professional life.

To touch upon our own experiences, it?s best to go first to what we would do differently. We realised at the beginning of the competition how little we knew about the Venture Capital (VC) industry and about how, where and why Venture Capitalists (VCs) invest. We were initially under the impression that the challenges we would face in the competition were more-or-less constrained to the stated competition rules. This turned out not to be the case, especially when facing interrogative questions from the competition judges ? VC professionals ? about why, how and how much we invested, why we invested under the terms we did, and what we saw as the next steps for the business in question. In short, anything VC-related was ?fair game?, not just the stated scope of the competition.

The key point for anyone in the future is that the entrepreneurs and judges will not treat you like a competition participant or give you any allowance for not being a professional Venture Capitalist. They will talk to you in their dialect and challenge you on the intricate meanings of terminology, which to complicate matters could be dependent upon the terms? contexts. In doing so the competition demands you behave, respond and altogether emulate a realVC outfit. To some extent we did, but if we were to begin again, it would be with the assumption that whilst the competition rules are to be acknowledged, our preparation and decisions would not necessarily be constrained or directed by them.

The 2012 VCIC team with their prize

Where the team did excel is how we worked together. I was continually impressed by the work-ethic, resourcefulness and professional attitude that was displayed throughout the six months of the VCIC. As both the competition and our contextual understanding progressed, a pleasing aspect of the team dynamic was the continual and open feedback ? self-regulation you could call it ? on everything associated with our preparation.

This fostered an approach to everything we did that was mature, established by consensus and involving all team members. I think this was the foundation upon which we impressed the judges at the finals in Oxford University?s Said Business School, as it particularly enabled us to work and appear as united as we were, conduct ourselves inter-personally to a level that belied the short time we had actually worked together, and clearly engaged with the entrepreneurs in an assertive yet diplomatic manner.

A key point for anyone in the future is that the entrepreneurs will judge you primarily based on whether they would want to work with you on their idea that could potentially change their lives, if not so much more. How you interact as a team, and how you conduct yourselves socially and professionally thus matters greatly. I suppose the element to remember for the VCIC is to choose your team members wisely; the team?s character will count for as much, if not more than it does in wider professional life. And I think it?s fair to say that you can learn about technical skills and develop an understanding far more readily than you can learn to be charismatic or genuine, or even likable, all of which are essential to do well in the VCIC.

The 2012 VCIC team representing Manchester Business School was: (from left to right) Torben M?ller, Gareth Wilson, Maanas Varun, Rafael Castelo Branco, Anthony Clark-Jones

This is not to say, however, that to progress, you can rely on a glossy exterior. You can?t. The more granular aspects of the VC industry, what is currently ?fashionable? in VC, and the complex environment in which entrepreneurs and VCs operate must also be understood, at least to the extent of being able to withstand a cross-examination of up to ten competition judges, if not the entrepreneurs themselves. The balance, let?s say, is to maintain a diplomatic, assertive and professional demeanour with this suitability underpinned by a scientific knowledge of the relevant processes, terminology and structures, of which the VC industry has many. Not easy, but clearly not impossible.

On reflection, there perhaps isn?t a winning formula for the VCIC. There is always an element of luck involved in which business propositions need to be analysed and what style of VC the judges follow. Nevertheless, excellent team-work, comprehensive preparation and the ability to remain composed yet assertive when being questioned on reasonably complex information will always enable future MBS teams to do well in this ever-more-popular competition.

Jobs and Career Training Tips and Info: Open Letter from a Student ...

Start a second career with?

Access Business College:

An Open Letter from a Student.

My name is Sherika Alexander and I?m a single mother of four.

Before enrolling at Access Business College, I was a manager at McDonalds located in the Jane and Finch area, a neighbourhood well known for often being in the news.

One day I was called into the store manager?s office, and handed a pink slip saying I was being laid off. I was a responsible, hard-working and reliable employee, but couldn?t escape the employee cuts. Right away, my world turned upside down.

After losing my job I lost my husband because I was unable to help provide for our family and I ended up in a shelter. One day, I decided to drop off resumes at the Jane and Finch Mall and came across the JVS Toronto career centre. I went in to browse the job posting board and came across a flyer about second career opportunities for laid off employees. I took the flyer and went on to the government website to research more about the Second Career Ontario Education Program and the education institutions that support it.

I called community colleges and lots of private colleges. One of the colleges I called was Access Business College. I spoke with the director and explained my situation. She invited me to come to the school and sit in on some of the classes to get an idea of the environment and teaching style the school embraces.

When I arrived, teachers and students knew me by name and that alone made me feel welcome. After my visit, and doing all of the paper work for second careers, I enrolled at Access Business College. The knowledgeable teaching staff and very structured business administration diploma program prepared me for my second career. Six months before graduation I was taught how to compose a customized resume for each position, a cover letter and interview techniques. Upon graduation I was prepared for my job search.

I want to thank Access Business College for providing some of the best teachers to help me with questions and concerns and for the one-on-one discussions. I want to thank the government for putting the second career program in place so that laid off employees like myself can go back to school not only to make a difference in my life but also my kids. If it was not for the second career program I would not have been able to afford to go back to school and receive my diploma. Thank you for supporting the adult education and students in putting our best foot forward in accomplishing our dreams.

-Sherika Alexander

Exotic particles, chilled and trapped, form giant matter wave

Excitons form Bose-Einstein condensate

Physicists have trapped and cooled exotic particles called excitons so effectively that they condensed and cohered to form a giant matter wave.

This feat will allow scientists to better study the physical properties of excitons, which exist only fleetingly yet offer promising applications as diverse as efficient harvesting of solar energy and ultrafast computing.

"The realization of the exciton condensate in a trap opens the opportunity to study this interesting state. Traps allow control of the condensate, providing a new way to study fundamental properties of light and matter," said Leonid Butov, professor of physics at the University of California, San Diego. A paper reporting his team's success was recently published in the scientific journal Nano Letters.

Excitons are composite particles made up of an electron and a "hole" left by a missing electron in a semiconductor. Created by light, these coupled pairs exist in nature. The formation and dynamics of excitons play a critical role in photosynthesis, for example.

Like other matter, excitons have a dual nature of both particle and wave, in a quantum mechanical view. The waves are usually unsynchronized, but when particles are cooled enough to condense, their waves synchronize and combine to form a giant matter wave, a state that others have observed for atoms.

Scientists can easily create excitons by shining light on a semiconductor, but in order for the excitons to condense they must be chilled before they recombine.

The key to the team's success was to separate the electrons far enough from their holes so that excitons could last long enough for the scientists to cool them into a condensate. They accomplished this by creating structures called "coupled quantum wells" that separate electrons from holes in different layers of alloys made of gallium, arsenic and aluminum.

Then they set an electrostatic trap made by a diamond-shaped electrode and chilled their special semiconducting material in an optical dilution refrigerator to as cold as 50 milli-Kelvin, just a fraction of a degree above absolute zero.

A laser focused on the surface of the material created excitons, which began to accumulate at the bottom of the trap as they cooled. Below 1 Kelvin, the entire cloud of excitons cohered to form a single matter wave, a signature of a state called a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Other scientists have seen whole atoms do this when confined in a trap and cooled, but this is the first time that scientists have seen subatomic particles form coherent matter waves in a trap.

Varying the size and depth of the trap will alter the coherent exciton state, providing this team, and others, the opportunity to study the properties of light and mater in a new way.

###

This most recent discovery stems from an ongoing collaboration between Leonid Butov's research group in UC San Diego's Division of Physical Sciences, including Alexander High, Jason Leonard and Mikas Remeika, and Micah Hanson and Arthur Gossard in UC Santa Barbara's Materials Department. The Army Research Office and the National Science Foundation funded the experiments, and the Department of Energy supported the development of spectroscopy in the optical dilution refrigerator, the technique used to observe the exciton condensate in a trap.

Joplin Tornado: Maddox Prier, Boy With Autism, Saved Family And Said 'I Love You' For First Time (VIDEO)

    "I hear the horns."

Those were the four words with which Maddox Prier, a nine year old with autism, woke his family before the EF-5 tornado struck Joplin, Mo., one year ago. The family climbed into the bathtub for safety and the storm hit seconds later, kspr.com reports.

Huddled in the bathtub, Janyce told each family member how much she loved them -- but hours after the tornado passed, Maddox -- who spoke his first words at five years old and doesn't express much emotion -- changed her life again:

"We were laying on the floor of the bedroom, and I was just looking at Maddox, and I was like, 'I love you Maddox,' and he goes, 'I love you too, Mommy' and he's never said it since," Janyce told KSPR. "That was the first time he'd ever said it. I bawled and bawled."

With the house and neighborhood destroyed, the family credits Maddox for saving them.

"I don't remember anything about the tornado hitting our house," Janyce told kspr.com. "I just, I guess in there somewhere, I just didn't want to be afraid, so the last thing I wanted to feel was that I loved everybody so, that's what I did."

Watch the video from KSPR above. And read more stories about other Joplin heroes below:

    • Mark Lindquist

Mark Lindquist, 51, risked his life -- and sustained critical injuries -- while trying to protect three developmentally disabled adults during the tornado that tore through Joplin, Mo., the AP reports. Both houses of the Missouri legislature honored Lindquist for his heroism, but he was left with astronomical medical bills, has no insurance and was denied workers' compensation. • Abi Almandinger

To help rescue the priceless memories that were strewn across Joplin, Mo., in the wake of the tornado, Abi Almandinger started Joplin's Found Photos. • Young Professionals

Many young professionals who once called Joplin home, left their cushy corporate jobs behind to help rebuild their tornado-torn city. Zach Tusinger, a St. Louis University law graduate whose aunt and uncle were killed in the tornado, was one such volunteer. "We saw our whole world turn upside down," Tusinger told the AP. "When I went back to work, it was killing me." Read the whole story here.

    • Christopher Don Lucas

When the tornado struck, Christopher Don Lucas rushed his co-workers and customers at the Pizza Hut where he worked into the restaurant's protective giant freezer. The 27-year-old father of two, who was engaged, was eventually pulled from the freezer and died. "He went out facing the tornado head-on," his father Terry Lucas told the AP. "He didn't flinch." Read Lucas' and other heroes' stories here.
