Woman survives hours in sea after plane crash

By Gil Aegerter, NBC News

A woman who survived the crash of an aircraft on Saturday spent hours in the ocean off the U.S. Virgin Islands before being rescued and crews were searching for three other people six miles south of St. Thomas, the Coast Guard said.

The twin-engine Piper Aztec had been delivering newspapers to St. Croix and picked up passengers before heading back to St. Thomas, David Mapp, interim Virgin Islands Port Authority executive director, told The Associated Press.

The Piper was reported overdue at 7:50 a.m. Saturday, Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad, based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, told NBC News. He said it was unclear when the aircraft took off.

Aircraft in the area, including a C-130 Hurricane Hunter tracking Tropical Storm Rafael, reported a debris field, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

A Coast Guard helicopter spotted Valerie Jackson in the water about 2 p.m. local time and directed a?Virgin Islands Department of Natural Resources boat to her. She told her rescuers that another woman and two men had been on the aircraft and she was taken to St. Thomas for treatment, the Coast Guard said.

The AP reported that Federal Aviation Administration records showed the plane's certification status had been terminated.

We don't have any foster kids in our house - Adoption.com Forums

We adopted our Baby Girl on the 1st and it's been slowly occurring to me over the month that we no longer have a foster kid in our house. It's so weird because we're still "foster parents" (licensed) but are now also "adoptive parents."

Part of me really wants to call and make sure the Dept knows that our house is open. The other part of me wants to wait and savor our freedom from social services. Also, we're kind of moving right now- probably at the end of the month (although we don't have a date yet). I'm sure our life is plenty busy without adding another one. But, I do know that their are kids out their without a home and I'd like to give them one- even if ours is slightly mobile at the moment.

Felix Baumgartner Breaks Speed Of Sound: Officials

Felix Baumgartner Speed Of Sound

In this photo provided by Red Bull Stratos, Pilot Felix Baumgartner of Austria celebrates after successfully completing the final manned flight for Red Bull Stratos in Roswell, N.M., Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012. (AP Photo/Red Bull Stratos, Balazs Gardi)

ROSWELL, N.M. -- Officials say that Felix Baumgartner has become the first skydiver to break the speed of sound.

At a news conference, Brian Utley of the International Federation of Sports Aviation said Baumgartner reached a maximum speed of 833.9 mph during his jump Sunday over the New Mexico desert.

That amounts to Mach 1.24, which is faster than the speed of sound. No one has ever reached that speed wearing only a high-tech suit.

Baumgartner says that traveling faster than sound is "hard to describe because you don't feel it." With no reference points, "you don't know how fast you travel."

Baumgartner came down safely in the eastern New Mexico desert about nine minutes after jumping from his capsule 128,100 feet, or roughly 24 miles, above Earth.

Spain, Germany, England find scoring form

By STEVE DOUGLAS

updated 1:55 a.m. ET Oct. 13, 2012

LONDON (AP) - World and European champion Spain romped to a 24th straight qualifying win on Friday, although no one in the country was able to see it.

Pedro Rodriguez scored a hat trick as the world's best team routed host Belarus 4-0 in one of a group of big wins for Europe's leading nations in 2014 World Cup qualifying.

Yet, celebrations were muted in the debt-ridden country after no broadcaster paid to televise the national team's match for the first time in 29 years.

Spain's wasn't the most convincing win of the third round of regional qualifiers, with Germany handing Ireland its worst loss since 1971, 6-1 at Dublin.

Wayne Rooney celebrated being handed the temporary England captaincy by scoring twice in a routine 5-0 win over San Marino, taking his goal total in international matches to 31, fifth on the country's all-time list.

But Italy was again unconvincing in beating Armenia 3-1, and the Netherlands managed only a comfortable 3-0 win over Andorra, which is 201st in the rankings.

However, Euro 2012 semifinalist Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, couldn't make the most of its dominance against Russia and lost 1-0 in a match between the top two teams in Group F.

The Portuguese are three points behind Russia, which is unbeaten under new coach Fabio Capello and has three straight wins in qualifying.

Also, Belgium enhanced its burgeoning reputation as a growing force in Europe with a 3-0 win in Serbia, which lost a home World Cup qualifier for the first time in more than 10 years.

Sweden and the Czech Republic needed second-half rallies to avoid draws against weak competition, beating Faeroe Islands 2-1 and Malta 3-1, respectively.

The victory for the Swedes left them second in Group C, three points behind Germany ahead of their meeting in Berlin on Tuesday.

The third straight qualifying victory for Germany was launched by Marco Reus' goals in the 32nd and 40th minutes before Mesut Oezil's penalty kick and goals by Miroslav Klose and Toni Kroos (two) turned it into a rout.

Spain warmed up for its Group I match against France, which surprisingly lost 1-0 at home to Japan in a friendly on Friday, by stretching its winning run in qualifying that dates back to September 2007.

Pedro set up Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba for the opener before scoring the remaining three goals himself in Minsk, putting Spain ahead of France on goal difference. Both countries have six points and only one team qualifies automatically from each group.

Spain, seeking an unprecedented fourth straight major international tournament trophy, is enjoying a golden era in its soccer history, but that still didn't persuade broadcasters to pay for coverage.

The blackout came after the producer, Sport Five, failed to reach a deal with any Spanish television channel. This was the first time a Spain match was not broadcast at home since 1983, when the team visited Malta.

Rooney was playing for England for the first time since Euro 2012 and was given the captain's role with Steven Gerrard suspended and Frank Lampard sidelined with injury. Rooney marked the occasion by joining Manchester United teammate Danny Welbeck in scoring twice at Wembley Stadium.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also scored for the hosts, who moved to the top of Group H.

It wasn't such a good night for Oxlade-Chamberlain's Arsenal teammate, Theo Walcott, who will spend the night in a hospital after colliding with goalkeeper Aldo Junior Simoncini early in the game.

Russia's winner against Portugal came with its only shot on goal in the first half, Alexander Kerzhakov scoring in the sixth minute.

Ronaldo, who has scored six times in his last three Spanish league games for Real Madrid, barely had a sniff in Moscow.

"Maybe we weren't as calm as we usually are," said Portugal coach Paulo Bento, whose team is the only leading European nation not to be atop its group at this stage.

Eddie Johnson scored two goals for the United States, including the winner in second-half injury time, in a 2-1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda. The road win put the Americans in position to advance to CONCACAF's final qualifying round if they draw with Guatemala on Tuesday night in Kansas City, Kan.

Guatemala beat Jamaica 2-1 on Friday night.

In Group B, Mexico was held scoreless for more than an hour and 15 minutes by Guyana, but wound up winning 5-0 to stay perfect. Costa Rica held onto second place in the group by winning 1-0 at El Salvador.

Canada beat undermanned Cuba 3-0 in Group C. The Cubans had only 11 players for the game, and finished with 10 after striker Roberto Linares was ejected for a challenge that crumpled captain Kevin McKenna. Four players left the team in Toronto.

In the other Group C game, Honduras and Panama tied 0-0.

In South American qualifying, host Argentina took the overall lead with 17 points as Lionel Messi scored two second-half goals and Sergio Aguero added another. Messi scored in the 66th and added another with a free kick in the 80th while Aguero scored in the 75th.

Alejandro Chumacero scored in the second half to lift host Bolivia into a 1-1 draw with Peru, while Colombia beat Paraguay 2-0.

Radamel Falcao scored two second-half goals as Colombia improved to 16 points in eight matches - among the leaders in qualifying - and left Paraguay with only four points from five matches, the worst record among the nine teams.

Felipe Caicedo scored twice as Ecuador defeated Chile 3-1 in Quito. Ecuador improved to 16 points, Chile has 12.

Friday Illusion: Sneaky snake seems to slither

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

Is that a snake slithering in the grass? Luckily, its movement is only an illusion.

In this animation by Michael Pickard from the University of Sunderland in the UK and colleagues, the impression of motion is created when a pattern changes shade. In the first example, a snake in the background appears to move horizontally. In the second version of the illusion, diamonds seem to dance around.

Although several different factors are responsible for the brain trick, changes in brightness play the biggest part. A careful look at the snake video reveals that the grid pattern is made up of alternating light and dark edges. Illusory movement is produced when the diamond-shaped spaces cycle between these shades, matching one edge then the other.

The effect is also amplified by the brightness of the background, which is deliberately set midway between the darkest and lightest shade. "As each diamond cycles from dark to light, its luminance momentarily equates to that of the background but is out of phase with the others," says Pickard. "This spatial imprecision may be picked up by our peripheral vision to add to the sense of movement."

The speed of the brightness change and the way we perceive the overall contrast of the pattern are also thought to affect the illusion.

The brain trick was recently presented at the European Conference on Visual Perception in Alghero, Italy.

Dr. Oz's Five Weight Loss Tips for Women Over 40. ? Alternative ...

Posted by: Christopher Maloney, Naturopathic Doctor | October 12, 2012

Carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine

I was excited to read Dr. Oz?s acknowledgement of a role for hormones in weight loss:? ?Hormones can really slow your weight loss efforts.?

So the top five weight loss tips must cover hormonal balancing, right?

Here they are quickly and then individually.

1) Konjac Fiber 2) Raspberry Ketones 3) L-Carnitine 4) White Kidney Bean Extract and 5) ?exercising smarter, not harder.

Ok, I don?t see anything specific for women, and nothing for over forty, and nothing directly to do with hormones.? But I could be wrong, so let?s break this down tip by tip.

First Konjac Fiber.? It just sounds sexy and exotic.? Like Cognac.? Wikipedia offers the alarming story of possible choking on Konjac candy:? ?Some products formed a gel strong enough such that only chewing, not tongue pressure or breathing pressure, could disintegrate the gel.?

But who cares?? Will it help me lose weight?? Evidently, yes, according to a small study of twenty obese patients.? Konjac?fiber broken down into Glucomannan did help patients lose over five pounds when consumed before every meal, that was in 1984.

If it works so well, why aren?t we seeing more studies?? Well, in 2007 they repeated the study, this time with a placebo group who just dieted.? The results were that?both groups lost weight, and the Konjac root didn?t make any real difference.

So not really that helpful?? Or maybe helpful when you don?t want to diet?? You decide.

2) Raspberry Ketones.? I?ve talked about these little beauties before.? But I did a good faith check online.??Medline still shows no human studies, and the one animal study gave an image of weight gain?prevention rather than fat loss.

3) L-Carnitine? is a great thing to think about, because it is involved in multiple body processes.? And it did help fat cats burn up extra weight.? But it also helps wasting cancer patients hold onto their weight.? According to a nice synopsis of Carnitine?s effects in the body, ?Because L-carnitine and its esters help reduce oxidative stress, they have been proposed as a treatment for many conditions.?? But Carnitine?s effect on weight loss hasn?t got human studies to back it up.

4)? White Kidney Bean Extract ? studied primarily for it?s effect on blocking the amylase enzyme.? Without that enzyme, your body can?t break down and absorb carbohydrates.? Sort of a ?let them eat cake and still lose weight? fantasy, but does it work?? Only if you goose the numbers.? The difference between white beaners and placebo were significant when both were dieting, but?the beaners?did better if a lot of carbs were involved.? Another study found the same thing.? So if you want to eat a cake, bring along your extract?so it passes right through you (no word on the side effects of not properly digesting your own carbs were presented).

5)? ?Exercise?smarter, not harder.?? Isn?t that a franchise slogan?? It should? be.? What we?re really saying here is that too much exercise can make you so hungry you stop dieting.? So don?t overdo.

What does any of this have to do with being an over-forty woman?? Nothing.

Since you?ve read this far, let me give you five tips for over-forty women.

1)? Get your hormones checked and rechecked.? Things like thyroid levels can bounce around like a ping pong?ball during perimenopause, which can last for years.

2)? Learn to balance your hormones.? Diet and lifestyle can take you far, but if you need help to make the transition into the second half of your life, then get help.

3)? Keep track of what foods annoy, and be aware of overdoing by combining things.? (Alcohol and cake, prescriptions and fried food).

4)? Sleep and relaxation are mandatory, not optional.? If you want your hormones to stay in control, you have to make your rest a priority.

5)? When in doubt, flush it out.? Don?t be afraid to take a few days to alter your diet and routine dramatically when things are slowly going downhill.?? Too often you end up dragging for weeks before you realy crash.

Thanks for reading!

How the fiscal cliff turns into a gentle 'fiscal hill'

Hyper-polarized Washington hasn?t shown itself capable of rational behavior, Reich writes; It's why the nation is heading over a fiscal cliff that may begin to look more like?a hill whose slope remains uncertain but will almost surely be gradual.

These are awkward days for deficit hawks who believe the American economy can get back to health only if the nation gets its fiscal house in order. If they get their wish, the economy goes over a cliff.

Regardless of what happens Election Day, at the beginning of next year more than $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts automatically go into effect. That?s equivalent to about 5 percent of the entire U.S. economy, more than the projected growth of the whole gross domestic product next year.

The problem is, if we fall off this fiscal cliff we plunge into recession. That?s because the cliff withdraws too much demand from the economy too quickly, at a time when unemployment is still likely to be high.

The Congressional Budget Office projects real economic growth will drop at an annual rate of 2.9 percent in the first half of 2013, and unemployment will rise to 9.1 percent by the end of next year.

As Spain and Great Britain have demonstrated, launching fiscal austerity at a time when a nation?s economic capacity is substantially underutilized causes the economy to contract. This makes the debt even larger in proportion to the size of the economy. Rather than reassure global lenders and investors, it spooks them more.

America is about to fall off the fiscal cliff because Democrats and Republicans in Congress haven?t been able to agree on a plan for long-term deficit reduction ? and this failure will trigger automatic spending cuts in January. Meanwhile, the temporary tax cuts enacted by former President George W. Bush in 2001 and 2003, and extended for two years by President Obama, will run out December 31st, as will the President?s temporary jobs measures ? a payroll-tax holiday and extended unemployment benefits.

In a rational world, deficit reduction on this scale wouldn?t happen until the economy is once again healthy ? when unemployment has dropped to below 6 percent and economic growth is back to at least 3 percent. These would be sensible triggers.

But hyper-polarized Washington hasn?t shown itself capable of rational behavior. Democrats and Republicans have been so much at each others? throats that whenever one side senses the other wants (or fears) something more, the party that doesn?t want or fear it as much has a bargaining advantage in an ongoing game of chicken.

This is why the nation is heading over the cliff ? or, more accurately,?appears?to be heading that way. Congressional Democrats have concluded Republicans are more afraid than they are of going over it because the pending tax increases will fall most heavily on America?s wealthy, and half the spending cuts would come out of the defense budget. (Republicans, you may have noticed, are particularly solicitous of the wealthy and of defense contractors.)

So most Democrats have decided to wait it out in order to maximize their bargaining power in negotiations over how to reduce the long-term deficit. They want a deal that raises taxes only on America?s wealthy and doesn?t substantially alter Medicare, and Social Security ? which is the opposite of what Republicans want.

Democrats also reason that, once the Bush tax cut has been terminated, Republicans won?t be able to resist an offer to reduce taxes on the middle class (those earning $250,000 or less). After all, Republicans have pledged to vote for any and all tax cuts. Once Democrats get the best deal they can, they?ll make it retroactive to January 1.

As a practical matter, then, negotiations over America?s budget deficit will drag on into the new year, right over and beyond the fiscal cliff. A deal might not be struck until February, or even March.

But because everyone will know that the final compromise won?t be nearly as draconian ? and is going to be retroactive to the start of the year ? the cliff won?t feel like much of a cliff. In actual effect it will be more like a hill whose slope remains uncertain but will almost surely be gradual.

With any luck, by the time significant tax increases and spending cuts take permanent effect, unemployment will already have dropped and growth accelerated. In other words, the irrational and irascible American political process may come up with a timetable for reducing the budget deficit that?s surprisingly sensible.

How to Use Images in Social Media to Drive Engagement | Business ...

Discover proven techniques to drive engagement in the Online Marketing Institute?s class, ?10 Essential Elements of a Mature Social Media Marketing Strategy?.

Pictures are a hot topic in 2012. From Instagram to Memes, they resonate with users and quickly engage them while being easy to share. Both businesses and personal social media users have been spending more time incorporating images into their social media playbook to stay connected with friends and fans.

Instagram & Pinterest
With the vast number of people having smart phones with cameras and internet access, people can take a photo and post online immediately. You can also upload charts and graphs for sharing as well. Many of these images have then been pinned to Pinterest boards and expanding the reach of the photos just from Instagram throughout the web. Pictures are incredibly popular because a person can quickly see the image and share it without having to read a long post or article. Two words: Instant gratification.

Memes
A meme is a photo with either a caption or additional image inserted into to make a point. Thanks to the Olympics and McKayla Maroney in the now popular ?McKayla Maroney is not impressed?, memes are the new hot visual social media topic. What does that mean for social media and business use?

With memes businesses can add a little fun to their social media to help engage users and encourage them to share with their friends. As they get passed around the internet they get changed with new slogans and pictures as people think of other ways to change them to fit their life.

What can I do with a Meme?
Below are two options of memes.

The first is a photo which can be of almost anything with a slogan laid over the top. Ask your friends and fans to write their own caption to get them to interact with your page.

The second is a photo overlaid another photo often with a caption below it. In this case it?s ?McKayla Maroney is not impressed? and fans have added her scowl to literally hundreds of photos. It can encourage your fans to upload photos and in the process tell you a little about what else they like.

Adding more images into your social media campaigns can help create larger engagement with your posts. By reviewing your social strategy and your voice you can find a way to add them in without changing your overall voice and strategy.

Today I?m happy to host a guest article from Gennifer Albin, a friend of mine and the author of Crewel. Read about Gennifer?s journey from SAHM to WAHM to WOHM (sometimes!) and how AP helped smooth the transition. And be sure to enter the giveaway at the end of today?s post ? you could win a set of children?s books, as well as Gennifer?s new novel, Crewel.

When I first started writing seriously I had a precocious three year-old and an infant. My early attempts at writing involved sitting down to nurse my daughter with my macbook perched on a folding tray table. I got pretty good at typing with one hand, and as I nursed on demand, I also got a lot of writing time. Unfortunately, it was a precarious set-up and one afternoon while standing with wiggling baby in one arm, boppy on my lap, and three year-old at my feet, I realized too late I?d misjudged how close I had moved the table. My chair knocked into it and a glass of water sitting next to my macbook baptized the keyboard. And thus began my transition to out-of-house writer.

Which leads to the first way parenting has changed for me since I started writing:

I became better at mutual parenting.

I have a very supportive husband who?s always been on board with breastfeeding, bed sharing, baby wearing and all my natural parenting inclinations. He would grab the sling and the baby when we went out to eat so I could finish my meal. He loved having the babies in bed with us. He fed me spoonfuls of food during the early nursing weeks when I was still figuring everything out. But for all his obvious enthusiasm, as a stay-at-home mom I clung to mommy guilt when it came time to ask for me time. After all, how could I ask him to stay home with the kids after he?d worked all day? He rebutted this every time with a reminder that I was doing important work, too.

After the water incident, he encouraged me to go out to the library and work an hour or two each night. I resisted at first, but slowly we fell into the swing of it. We perfected how long I could be away before baby needed to nurse. We communicated if our needs changed. For instance, if one of the children was having a particularly rough time, he might ask if I could come home early. And as things got serious with the book, I relaxed into letting him take over the primary care so I could focus on my career.

Now we?re both at home writing and learning how to keep a household running. I no longer cling to what I feel are my responsibilities as a mom. We work together to meet our children?s emotional and physical needs, and it?s working for us.

As book deals happened and editorial letters arrived, I learned to ask for help, and I stopped trying to be perfect. You might think I learned those things from becoming a better mutual parent, and certainly all these transitions are tangled up in one another, but at the end of the day, I?ve always been the one who does it all. The kid who does the whole group project to ensure it?s done correctly and on time. That was me. Even as I became better at sharing parenting with my husband, I wasn?t good at asking for his ? or anyone else?s ? help, which had a lot to do with wanting things to be perfect. Well, one thing I?ve realized is that in my pursuit of control, I often took on too much, ensuring nothing I did came out perfectly. Yes, delegating a task to someone else means it will be done their way, but that?s not always a bad thing.

I also learned that it?s okay to need help. My family and I went through a lot before I sold Crewel, and I got pretty good at putting on a brave face and pretending everything was fine ? that I didn?t need help. Once deadlines started hitting, I figured out pretty quickly that not only did I need help, but that no one minds if you ask for it. My family and friends love me and they want to help, and realizing that helped me find my tribe.

I?d been a loner most of my stay-at-home mom years, venturing out occasionally to a play date or group activity but never gelling with anyone. Part of opening myself up to help was opening myself up to relationships. I made new friends with similar lifestyles, interests, and values. Existing relationships evolved and grew. My mother and I discovered that writing and painting share many of the same joys and trials. My children?s extended family grew beyond the obligatory family holidays to include adoptive aunts and uncles and cousins. Now I have a whole network of people that lend me support every day whether it be emotional or practical.

But the one thing that never really changed was how Attachment Parenting naturally fit into my lifestyle as my family transitioned through the publishing process. I breastfed my daughter for two beautiful years. My children slept in our bed until they wanted their own. My son still occasionally crawls in with us in the wee hours, and our daughter dreams in her own toddler bed at the foot of ours. Most of the changes I experienced in parenting were my own; AP provided a foundation for my children during these transitions.

We find adventure in the everyday, and our attachment roots have produced four independent, curious people that are happy to explore the world, always knowing we?re secure in our relationships with each other.

Car Insurance and You : : Retro Low-Fi

Car Insurance San Diego There are more cars and drivers hitting the road each year. With so many cars on the road, accidents will happen. The difference between a minor aggravation and large obstacle can be automobile Insurance. But why do you need Insurance and just how much should you buy? Liability: It pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. Higher recommended Insurances are available that cover more than the lower, state-mandated Insurance. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. It may also pay for lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. State law usually sets minimum amounts. Medical payments: This type of coverage is available in non-no-fault states and will pay no matter who is responsible for the accident. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical or funeral expenses for bodily injury from an accident. Collision: This pays for damage to your car caused by a collision. Comprehensive: Applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured motorist: This pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability Insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-insured motorist: This pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability Insurance to cover the full amount of the damages. Other coverages, like car rental and emergency road service, are also available. truck Insurance

Meteorite's Black Glass May Reveal Secrets of Mars

Black glass from a Martian meteorite that crashed in Morocco last summer may shed light on not only the surface of the Red Planet but also its interior and atmosphere, a new study reveals.

Rocks are occasionally blasted off the surface of Mars by cosmic impacts from asteroids. These drift in space, with some crashing down on Earth. Martian rock known to be on Earth is very rare: only about 220 pounds (100 kilograms) worth.

Last July, a swarm of Martian meteorites plunged into the Moroccan desert. These rocks, named Tissint meteorites after the village they landed near, were the first batch of Martian meteorites to be collected right after observers witnessed their fall. All the other Martian meteorites, many of them recovered from Antarctica, had been gathered well after arrival, during which time degradation and contamination may have obscured secrets they held about Mars.

Within a Tissint meteorite, scientists found an abundance of black glass that they say may contain traces of Mars' surface, atmosphere and interior. This glass preserved key details about Mars.?[Black Glass in New Martian Meteorite (Photos)]?

The black glass resulted from melting, probably caused by the impact that knocked the rock off Mars an estimated 700,000 years ago.

The meteorite is mostly a kind of volcanic rock known as basalt, rich with an olive-green crystal known as olivine. This suggests it once was part of Mars' interior. However, levels of sulfur, fluorine and trace elements such as cesium hint at material from the Martian surface. In addition, the glass contains bubbles of Martian atmosphere.

To explain the presence of the interior, surface and atmosphere of Mars in one meteorite, the researchers suggest the rock's cracks and fissures were infiltrated by fluids washing down from the Red Planet's surface.

"It was really surprising and very exciting to find the evidence of Martian surface alteration in Tissint," lead study author Hasnaa Chennaoui at Hassan II University in Casablanca, Morocco, told SPACE.com. "We didn't expect this result."

The meteorite possesses certain varieties (isotopes) of helium, neon and argon that were likely formed by collisions with the high-energy-charged particles of cosmic rays. The isotopes reveal the rock spent about 700,000 years in space. This makes the Tissint rocks roughly the same age as three-quarters of all known Martian meteorites, suggesting they all got knocked off Mars by the same event.

The scientists detailed their findings online today (Oct. 11) in the journal Science.

With wife expecting, Stephan Bonnar ready to jump on private jet after UFC 153

Though Stephan Bonnar has UFC 153 and Anderson Silva on his mind, he has another concern when he's in Brazil this week. Bonnar's wife Andrea is pregnant and due at the end of the month. Since babies are born on their own schedule and not the UFC's, Bonnar has a contingency plan ready to go for the event Andrea goes into labor earlier than expected.

According to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, UFC president Dana White has offered to fly Bonnar back to his home in Las Vegas immediately after the fight with Silva in his private jet.

Bonnar took White up on his offer, but the Bonnars still have another plan in place, according to TMZ.

Andrea says Stephan?plans to video conference in to his wife's birth if he can't make it in time -- but she adds, "We're trying to avoid even thinking about that."

Their son's birth will be forever connected to Bonnar's last-minute fight with Silva. After featherweight champion Jose Aldo's injury threatened UFC 153, Bonnar stepped up to fight Silva, the middleweight champion and pound-for-pound king at light heavyweight.

There is a chance their son will be connected to Bonnar's most famous fight, as well. As Iole also mentioned, Stephan and Andrea are considering naming their son Griffin Bonnar in honor of the Bonnar-Forrest Griffin bout at the first "Ultimate Fighter" finale.

Closing the Deal: Building a Business that Generates Income

Many of you, like me, are putting in a lot of time, energy, and money into developing an online business.

And yet concrete outcomes (substantial business income, successful products, etc.) sometimes seem so far away.

We?re taught to be the ?little engines that could,? but how many hills do we have to climb before we can relish a bit of success?

I?m now in the middle of writing my book ?Mindflexing,? while simultaneously attempting to increase my e-mail subscribers, blog at least weekly, participate in social media, research new prospective clients, and last-but-not-least, produce real income. Whew!

I have a lot on my plate and so do you.

Okay, breathe for a second.

Selling just for the sake of selling isn?t what you want to do. Nobody wants to be the car salesman who convinces customers to buy that green car with expensive add-ons, when they really want the blue, simpler model, right?

On the flip side, providing ?value? via your blog posts and other content while getting zero money for your efforts isn?t what you want to do either. Business is supposed to make money.

A frustrated member in a private Facebook group for budding web?entrepreneurs?laid it out perfectly: ?Are any of you generating any income with your website?? There wasn?t much positive response.

Back to basics?again

This week I?m revisiting things I?ve already learned.

My mentor, Tea, encouraged me to identify, grab, and yank the most important levers in creating a profitable business.

It?s easy to miss the obvious things:

  1. I need to know who I am and what I sell.
  2. I need to explain what I do and sell myself.
  3. I need to create actual sales.

Here?s my just-created, two-sentence explanation of who I am and what I expect to get paid for (yes, it still needs work):

?I?m a learning consultant and professional developer who transforms the ability of individuals and companies to learn how they learn. My customized coaching multiplies the value of current organization and training, accelerates performance, sparks useful conceptual thinking, identifies gaps, applies strengths, and improves communication, collaboration, and time effectiveness.?

Here is the first draft of my target audience follow-up:

?I specialize in helping highly intelligent, creative, and non-conventional organizations and individuals create new and powerful ways to bring their unique gifts and products into the world. My coaching resolves two major needs in current professional development: 1) Making teaching or training ?stick? with people in a lasting, growing, and meaningful way, and 2) Ensuring that training is successfully transferred across different arenas (departments, tasks, and job descriptions).?

In other words, I help to make external content become an internalized, mobile skill. (<?Note from Tea: this still needs to be simplified.)

Illustrating What I do Via an Example

Almost everyone has been forced to attend one of those eye-rolling lectures on ?cultural diversity? or ?gender sensitivity.? Yes, these subjects are important. But the way in which they?re delivered is typically mind-numbing and abstract. The sessions tend to deteriorate quickly into legal check boxes for organizations wanting to avoid liability. Unsurprisingly, they roll off rather than ?stick? to participants.

The problem is that diversity and sensitivity sessions are not effectively geared toward constructive engagement. What if these sessions could involve exploration, role play, discussion, and action-oriented ways to engage differences as an opportunity, rather than a threat?

That?s a pretty compelling and real solution: turning a royal pain in the butt into a useful and interesting learning opportunity. (<? Note from Tea: Now THAT?s a better way to explain what you do, Zeus.)

(Of course, it would help immensely if I have a package of testimonials and actual results to back up my ability to meet this need.)

Building toward Selling

In our discussion this week, Tea used the metaphor of dating. She asked, How would you ?date? your clients?

Clearly I don?t want to use a sales pitch too soon. That would be like asking a new love interest up to my bedroom on the first date. Not exactly a sign of respect and interest in a long-term relationship.

If you?re like me, you have the opposite problem. You don?t ask too soon. You forget to ask at all.

You?re somewhat squeamish about putting together a viable pitch and then executing a well-constructed plan to create sales. Eventually you?ll want a tangible commitment from someone. So, how do you do that?

Here are some steps I developed in conversation with Tea, for my business:

  1. Provide concrete examples of what I can do.?Using my blog and other content, I need to tell stories that illustrate my usefulness, provide relevant and helpful information about how to solve the problems of my ideal clients, and communicate the concrete advantages of my various approaches. [?Hey, I tried that. It really does work!?]
  2. Identify and create a list of potential clients and client ?types? and then reach out to them.?For me this means: learning disabled, cultural creatives, creative companies, etc. I also need to find ways to connect to them (e.g., word-of-mouth, recommendations, influencers, keynote speaking, etc.).
  3. Research potential client needs and find small ways to deliver some of that in ways that lead to bigger things. An example: Sign a non-disclosure agreement and work as an advisor taking some small piece of an organizational problem, to show what you can do. This is where value comes in, and then a discussion about compensation to extend that value.
  4. Make a pitch. For me: ?This is how my learning transformation can help you with X.
  5. Ask for the sale.?This is like asking for a vote. You?re asking for a ?yes? vote of confidence and commitment to do the work.

The important difference between marketing and selling

In our mentoring conversation this week, Tea made a very helpful and deceptively simple distinction between marketing and sales. It?s true: Marketing and Sales are not the same.

Marketing is about building awareness and attracting people to what you?re doing. It?s also the relationship-building part. Selling, on the other hand, is about closing the deal and generating income.

We?ve got to understand this important distinction if we?re ever going to dispel a couple of rampant myths about what marketing actually does:

Myth #1: ?Good marketing automatically generates sales.?

For the majority of businesses, this is simply false.

First, you have to have something to sell that people want to buy. Many people are still in the stage of trying to get together a product that meets a real need ?out there.? Right now, I?m hard at work writing my signature book product, ?Mindflexing.? But I also have credible services to market and sell?now.

Second, you have to actually let people know what you?re selling. (How hard is it for people to figure this out when they visit your website? Or when they hear you introduce yourself?)

Third, you have to ask for the sale. That is, actually ask someone to buy what you?re offering. (You?d be surprised how often people forget to do this.)

In some situations, if you attract enough people and create enough buzz, people may buy your product or service simply out of curiosity or desire.

But hopes and wishes aren?t a great business strategy.?More often you must actually?ask them to buy.

Myth #2: ?It?s all about providing value.?

No! ?Value? provided without eventual income is a hobby, not a business, according to Tea.

Value is a crucial step in developing relationships and trust. However, if some relationships don?t move forward to a sale, then you?re essentially doing volunteer work.

What?s my own success in doing this? I?m no guru, for sure. I?ve managed to create several thousand dollars of service income in my business so far (through current relationships and word of mouth). But this is a far cry from the $100,000 annual goal I aspire to reach in the next 10 months.

However, I am ?building? toward producing income, and my goals reflect that?

  1. Develop a working website (check),
  2. Create a compelling entry-level product (book in progress),
  3. Expand services (currently cultivating promising relationship with a private company),
  4. Establish lasting connections with audience (regular blogging, subscribers being added to my website)
  5. Try out a couple of modest pitches with people I know well.

Thinking about outcomes in terms of a bottom line will not make money magically appear, but it will refocus your priorities, your planning, and your actions in directions that have a much better chance of creating income.

Who are you and what are you selling?

What is your two-sentence explanation of who you are and what you expect to get paid for? What concrete things are you doing right now to generate income or build directly toward a paying business?

Share with us in a comment below. It?s great practice and hey ? your next potential client just might find you there!

A Word From Tea

I try not to edit Zeus? blog posts too much. If I did, you?d lose the flavor that is uniquely him.

But I do want to point out that Zeus? two-sentence statement about what he does needs some polishing. And I know from experience that most everyone else?s do, too.

How could he make his pitch better?

One word: Simplify.

Keep the words short and sweet. Any 12 year old should be able to understand it.

Yes, even if you?re a smarty pants PhD who?ll probably do work for other smarty pants folks.

When you simplify, you make it easy for anyone ? even your mother ? to tell other people what you do.

So before you post your pitch in a comment below, take a moment or two and see if you can simplify. Have you used too many multi-syllabic words? Are your sentences longer than a freight train? The trick is to be crystal clear in as few words as possible. Ready? Go!

And if you need some help with this, by all means ask away! The whole point of these posts is to develop conversations that serve everyone.

(Of course, if you?d rather do this privately with me, perhaps we should schedule a consultation?)

Mrs. Romney says horses helped with MS diagnosis

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The wife of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney said Wednesday that her love of horses helped her overcome her fear that multiple sclerosis would put her in a wheelchair.

Ann Romney was guest hosting ABC's "Good Morning America" when she spoke about her depression after receiving the diagnosis 14 years ago.

"I was very, very weak and very much worried about my life, thinking I was going to be in a wheelchair as well," she said. "Turned to horses, my life has been dramatically different. They gave me the energy, the passion to get out of bed when I was so sick that I didn't think I'd ever want to get out of bed."

Mrs. Romney is part-owner of a horse that competed this summer in the Olympic sport of dressage, the equine equivalent of ballet. She spoke about her love of horses while standing in New York's Times Square, petting Paralympic horse Lord Luger as rider Rebecca Hart discussed how equine therapy helped keep her out of a wheelchair.

Mrs. Romney also helped interview the competitors eliminated Tuesday night from "Dancing with the Stars." The beginning of her appearance went a little awry when she said the show's staff turned the heat up too high for her family's Welsh cake recipe.

"I've got a cooking emergency!" she said, smiling as the camera turned to her pulling the cakes off the griddle.

She was filling in for co-host Robin Roberts, who is recovering from a bone marrow transplant. ABC says it is in discussions with first lady Michelle Obama for a similar guest appearance.

Mitt Romney told voters at an event in Ohio that he watched his wife's appearance and saw a lot of campaign ads against him during commercial breaks. "It's a good thing I don't do that very often because my blood pressure would be very high," he said.

In a separate interview broadcast Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "America's Newsroom," Mrs. Romney said she immediately knew as the first presidential debate began last week that her husband would win because of the energy he showed.

"I knew after the first question," she said in the taped interview. "I turned to my son after 50 minutes, and I gave him a nudge, and I said, 'It's 100 to zero right now.'"

Mrs. Romney sharply disputed accusations from Obama's campaign that her husband failed to tell the truth during the debate.

"It's sort of like someone that, you know, in the sandbox that, like, lost the game. And they're just going to kick sand in someone's face and say, 'You liar,'" she said. "I mean, it's like they lost, and so now they just are going to say, 'OK, the game, you know, we didn't like the game.' So it's to me, it's poor sportsmanship."

She said she hopes her husband's performance leads more women to support his campaign because so many of them approach her on the campaign trail to say how they are struggling in the current economy.

"These are real people out there. They're not numbers to Mitt and I anymore," she said. "And I hope that came across, that why Mitt's running, is to make the economic opportunities for people that are out there that are really, really desperate."

Later in the day, Mrs. Romney flew to Florida to tour the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. Mrs. Romney, who also overcame a bout with breast cancer, also made bracelets with cancer survivors at the facility.
