Young teacher?s sadness at Egypt football violence

A FLINTSHIRE teacher living in Egypt has spoken of her sorrow at the football violence which left 74 people dead.

Dozens of people were crushed to death, suffocated or fatally stabbed after a pitch invasion in Port Said by fans of the home-side, al-Masry, which had just beaten Cairo's al-Ahly last Wednesday.

It follows a year of unrest which saw President Hosni Mubarak removed from power.
Lauren Rowley, from Connah?s Quay, who now lives in 6th of October City near Cairo, told the [ITALS] Leader: ?Everyone is very sad at the moment and we don?t really understand why it happened.

?There are different views on why it happened.?

The 22-year-old, who has taught at the British School of Egypt since graduating from
the University of Bangor, says an evacuation procedure has been implemented at the school in case of an emergency.

?Some roads have been blocked off by protestors too,? she said.

?After the football match there was a big march so all the roads were closed and there have been unofficial marches since then.

?Some schools are closing early too because the children travel quite far to get home.?

Two people were killed and more than 400 injured in further protests in the city of Suez following the game and clashes with police.

Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri said the head of Egypt's football association had been sacked and the board dissolved with its members referred to prosecutors for questioning.

Previously The Egyptian Football Federation had suspended all leagues in the country following the violence.

A spokesman read: ?The Egyptian federation has decided to stop the football leagues in all four divisions for an indefinite period after the violence that occurred in the game between al-Masry and al-Ahly, which represented a tragic shock to the centre of sport in general and the football family in particular.?

Lauren was crowned Miss Flintshire in November 2009 and was a finalist in the Miss Wales competition held in June 2010.

She went to Egypt to work because of the lack of teaching jobs locally.
