1st ODI: Nasir Jamshed takes Pakistan closer to victory against India

NEW DELHI: Opener Nasir Jamshed led from the front as he cracked an unbeaten 101 to help Pakistan register comfortable six-wicket victory over India in the first ODI at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai.

Scorecard | Match in Pics

Ishant Sharma scalped Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq to give India fourth breakthrough.

India got a huge sigh of relief with Younus Khan's dismissal, who notched up 58 off 60 balls. Ashok Dinda struck to give India a crucial breakthrough, removing Younus who played towards mid wicket on low full toss where Ravichandran Ashwin pouched a low catch to end the blistering knock.

Nasir Jamshed also slammed a fine fifty apiece to put Pakistan in driver's seat. Jamshed faced 76 deliveries to reach his half-century that included four boundaries while Younus made a quick-fire fifty in 53 balls, smashing three fours and a six.

Pakistan picked the pace as Jamshed and Younus started targeting part time bowlers by hammering fours and sixes all over the park.

The duo produced a good batting display to resurrect Pakistan innings, stitching 112-run stand to set the foundation for Pakistan after Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck for the second time to dent visitor's run-chase by dismissing Azhar Ali.

Making his ODI debut, Bhuvneshwar struck on the first delivery of his career to bowl out Mohammad Hafeez. Kumar forced Ali (9) to play a shot straight to Rohit Sharma at mid wicket to leave Pakistan struggling at 21/2 in 10.2 overs.

Earlier, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni single-handedly resurrected India's innings with a defiant unbeaten century as the hosts recovered from a top-order collapse to post a fighting 227/6.

Pacer Junaid Khan had justified his captain Misbah-ul-Haq's decision to bowl first in damp conditions with a four-wicket haul, which cleaned up the Indian top order, before Dhoni (113 off 125 balls) got going and brought the home team back into the match.

The under-fire skipper, who also completed 7,000 ODI runs during the course of his innings, rescued the hosts with some fine support from Suresh Raina (43) and R Ashwin (31 not out) down the order.

Dhoni and Ashwin shared the best-ever seventh-wicket partnership for India, adding 125 runs.

But to start with, it seemed like a nightmare unfolding for India with struggling opener Virender Sehwag becoming Junaid's first victim.

The Delhi batsman, considered a game-changer for his ability to take the attack to the opposition, swung it Pakistan's way after slogging for 11 balls to get four runs.

The right-hander, already under fire for failing repeatedly in the lost Test series against England, did his reputation no good by failing to pick a Junaid inswinger, which crashed into his middle and off stumps.

What followed was a procession of sorts as the top half of the Indian line-up made quick return to the dressing room.

Big guns such as Gautam Gambhir (8), Virat Kohli (0) and Yuvraj Singh (2) made blink-and-miss appearances as Junaid worked his magic, getting ample support from Mohammed Irfan and pace spearhead Umar Gul.

The big four of the Indian batting order were all bowled, three of them by Junaid, who seemed unplayable in the damp conditions due to overnight rain.

The proverbial promising batsman of the side, Rohit Sharma, added another one to his growing list of failures, becoming Junaid's fourth victim after scratching around for 14 deliveries for his four runs.

Rohit's last six ODI innings now read a disappointing 4, 4, 4, 0, 0 and 5. In fact, the top five managed to pull off just two fours for the team.

At 29/5 in a little less than 10 overs, India were staring firmly down the barrel before Raina and Dhoni came together to repair the innings slowly and steadily.

The cautious duo added 73 runs for the sixth wicket and defied Pakistani bowlers for a good 23 overs.

Dhoni got a life on 16 when in the 26th over rival skipper Misbah-ul Haq dropped him at midwicket of Mohammed Hafeez's bowling and the Indian, who smashed seven fours and three sixes, made it count.

Dhoni was suffering from dehydration and also battled cramps towards the end of India innings.

Meanwhile, Raina's patient innings came to an end when he lost his leg stump to Hafeez. But Dhoni was unfazed and, in fact, accelerated from that point, reaching his fifty with a whip over midwicket boundary off Umar Gul.

For a man not exactly known for solid technique, Dhoni was the lone Indian batsman to smash spin ace Saeed Ajmal for a six. A new ball had to be sought to replace the one which went out of the ground.

He also brought up his hundred in style, hoicking Irfan over cover in the 49th over, which produced 21 runs with Dhoni doing most of the scoring. For Pakistan, Junaid was the most successful bowler, grabbing 4/43 in his nine overs.

This was the first match played under the new ICC rules. Under these rules, one new ball was used at each end, bowlers were allowed two bouncers an over, there was no batting Power Play, the bowling Power Play was completed before the 40th over, and at no stage in the innings more than four fielders were allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

'Fiscal cliff' disputes remain as deadline nears

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., walks to a closed-door meeting with fellow Democrats as he and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., work to negotiate a legislative path to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff," at the Capitol in Washington, Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? The White House and Senate Republicans sorted through stubborn disputes over taxing the wealthy and cutting the budget to pay for Democratic spending proposals as Monday's midnight deadline for an accord avoiding the "fiscal cliff" drew to within hours.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., spoke repeatedly Sunday to Vice President Joe Biden, a former Senate colleague, in hopes of settling remaining differences and clinching a breakthrough that has evaded the two sides since President Barack Obama's November re-election. In one indication of the eleventh-hour activity, aides said the president, Biden and top administration bargainer Rob Nabors were all working late at the White House, and McConnell was making late-night phone calls as well.

Unless an agreement is reached and approved by Congress by the start of New Year's Day, more than $500 billion in 2013 tax increases will begin to take effect and $109 billion will be carved from defense and domestic programs. Though the tax hikes and budget cuts would be felt gradually, economists warn that if allowed to fully take hold, their combined impact ? the so-called fiscal cliff ? would rekindle a recession.

"There is still significant distance between the two sides, but negotiations continue," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said shortly before the Senate ended an unusual Sunday session. "There is still time to reach an agreement, and we intend to continue negotiations."

The House and Senate planned to meet Monday, a rarity for New Year's Eve, in hopes of having a tentative agreement to consider. Yet despite the flurry of activity, there was still no final pact.

And in a move that was sure to irritate Republicans, Reid was planning ? absent a deal ? to force a Senate vote Monday on Obama's campaign-season proposal to continue expiring tax cuts for all but those with income exceeding $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples.

Attached to the measure ? which the GOP seemed likely to block ? would be an extension of jobless benefits for around 2 million long-term unemployed people. The plan was described by Sen. Richard Durbin of Illinois, the chamber's No. 2 Democrat.

The House and Senate met Sunday ready to debate an agreement or at least show voters they were trying. But the day produced alternating bursts of progress and pitfalls, despite Senate chaplain Barry Black's opening prayer in which he asked the heavens, "Look with favor on our nation and save us from self-inflicted wounds."

In one sign of movement, Republicans dropped a demand to slow the growth of Social Security and other benefits by changing how those payments are increased each year to allow for inflation.

Obama had offered to include that change, despite opposition by many Democrats, as part of earlier, failed bargaining with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, over a larger deficit reduction agreement. But Democrats said they would never include the new inflation formula in the smaller deal now being sought to forestall wide-ranging tax boosts and budget cuts, and Republicans relented.

"It's just acknowledging the reality," Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said of the GOP decision to drop the idea.

There was still no final agreement on the income level above which decade-old income tax cuts would be allowed to expire. While Obama has long insisted on letting the top 35 percent tax rate rise to 39.6 percent on earnings over $250,000, he'd agreed to boost that level to $400,000 in his talks with Boehner. GOP senators said they wanted the figure hoisted to at least that level.

Senators said disagreements remained over taxing large inherited estates. Republicans want the tax left at its current 35 percent, with the first $5.1 million excluded, while Democrats want the rate increased to 45 percent with a smaller exclusion.

The two sides were also apart on how to keep the alternative minimum tax from raising the tax bills of nearly 30 million middle-income families and how to extend tax breaks for research by business and other activities.

Republicans were insisting that budget cuts be found to pay for some of the spending proposals Democrats were pushing.

These included proposals to erase scheduled defense and domestic cuts exceeding $200 billion over the next two years and to extend unemployment benefits. Republicans complained that in effect, Democrats would pay for that spending with the tax boosts on the wealthy.

"We can't use tax increases on anyone to pay for more spending," said Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas.

Both parties also want to block an immediate 27 percent cut in reimbursements to doctors who treat Medicare patients. Republicans wanted to find savings from Obama's health care bill as well as from Medicare providers, while Democrats want to protect the health care law from cuts.

Both sides agree that a temporary 2-percentage-point cut in the Social Security payroll tax was likely to expire. That reduction ? to 4.2 percent ? was initiated by Obama two years ago to help spur the economy and has meant $1,000 annual savings to families earning $50,000.

A senior defense official said if the spending cuts were triggered, the Pentagon would soon begin notifying its 800,000 civilian employees to expect furloughs ? mandatory unpaid leave, not layoffs. It would take time for the furloughs to be implemented, said the official, who requested anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the preparations

The Holy Family: There's No Place Like Home!

In The Wizard of Oz, a homesick young Dorothy clicks her heels together and exclaims, ?There?s no place like home!? There?s no place like home!?

Mary and Joseph must have felt the same way, when they finally settled into their routine in Nazareth.? First there was that arduous trip to Bethlehem for the census and the frantic search for lodging.? Joseph had been forced to make their bed in a lowly stable?and there, as darkness fell in that faraway land, Mary?s labor began and she delivered her firstborn Son in the brittle straw.? Just a few days later, they climbed to Jerusalem to present the newborn Jesus at the Temple?where both Simeon and Anna prophesied, telling the young couple that their infant was the Messiah! ?Finally, Joseph and Mary had to make that hurried flight into Egypt to escape Herod?s murderous attack on young Jewish male children.

So it must have been quite a happy moment when at last Joseph could turn his attention to carpentry and Mary could sing soft lullabies as she baked bread, her young Son at her knee.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family.??The last sentence of today?s Gospel passage offers a peek into their window:? ?The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.? ?Young Jesus was safe and snug, in the privacy of his family?s home.

Pope Benedict Encourages Family Prayer

Pope Benedict, in his weekly address on December 28, spoke of the Holy Family as a model of family life marked by faith, work and regular moments of prayer together. ??The house of Nazareth,? he said, ?is a school of prayer where we learn to listen, to meditate, to penetrate the deepest meaning of the manifestation of the Son of God, drawing our example from Mary, Joseph and Jesus.?

If children do not learn to pray in the family, the Holy Father warned, it will be difficult to fill this gap later.

The Family as Domestic Church:? A Contemporary Case Study

Luigi and Maria Beltrame Quattrocchi understood the need to nurture faith in their young children, and integrated prayer into the daily routine in their family.

Born in Italy in the early 1880s, the couple married in November 1905 in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.? Luigi was a lawyer and civil servant; Maria dedicated herself to her family, while volunteering for a number of charitable and social Catholic movements.

The Quattrocchis had four children. Filippo, the eldest, became a diocesan priest, becoming known by the name of Don Tarcisio.? Cesare, the second son, left home in 1924 to become a Trappist monk, taking the name of Fr. Paolino.??Stefania entered the Benedictine cloister in Milan and took the name Cecilia.

In 1913, Maria became pregnant a fourth time; but because of complications during the difficult pregnancy, the gynecologists urged her to have an abortion in hope of ?at least saving the mother.??? Luigi and Maria refused to abort their child, even though the possibility of survival then with that diagnosis was just five per cent.? Although Maria?s suffering was great, they chose, instead, to trust in God.? The child did survive, and her grateful parents named her Enrichetta.? Although Enrichetta did not enter religious life as her older brothers and sister had done, she devoted her life to carrying, first, for her aging parents, and then for her priest brother.

Luigi and Maria?s loving family is an example of heroic sanctity in everyday life?a portrait of love and respect through the ups and downs of marriage.? On November 25, 1994, the cause for Beatification for Maria and Luigi Beltrame Quattrocchi was opened.? Just seven years later?on October 21, 2001?Pope John Paul II beatified the couple, the first married couple to be so recognized by the Church for their sanctity.? On October 28 of that year, the remains of Luigi and Maria were transferred to the crypt in Rome?s Shrine of Divino Amore (Divine Love).

A PRAYER FOR FAMILY LIFE

Dear Lord, with Mary and Joseph, you have lived within a family;
Teach me always to appreciate the precious gift of being part of a family.
Show me ever new ways to protect and comfort those closest to me, and
Let me, each day, do something that will say ?I love you? without speaking the words.
But remind me also to frequently say those words.
Let me never part from any member of my family in anger.
Prompt me always to turn back without delay ? to forgive, and be forgiven.
And let me see your image within each person
in my own family, and in my greater family,
Knowing that in your Kingdom, we will truly be one family,
United by your sacrifice on the cross.
Amen.

From Fr. Tommy Lane, S.S.L., S.T.D.
