Drug addiction is a major problem worldwide and this problem is only getting worse. All families are affected in some way, either directly or indirectly. Education is a major key in the safe-guarding against drugs in the home. As a society we need to work together and not keep the secrets behind closed doors.
Children go to school and schools are full of children from many different families. A child is exposed to a whole array of various different things in the time that they attend school. Drugs are in schools and it is really up to the individual to learn to say "NO" When an "addict" is using and abusing drugs his or her family is affect directly and on many levels. Emotionally, financially and psychologically the whole family becomes a part of this problem. Even distant family or friends are affected in some way. So often the children that are not using become less important for a season. The parents put all their focus into the addict. Also we find that some siblings learn to resent their parents because these types of situations become volatile and people always pick a side.
Education is a great way to prevent a problem. Education is also a key in fighting a problem. So often and especially with drugs, families just do not know what to do or how to prevent the problem. As parents its vital to find out about the various drugs available and their side effects. Its also important to be informed on the various trends in the schools. A form of open and honest communication between children and their parents is a foundation that must be in place.
Society frowns upon addiction yet society is affected. If we learn to bring the truth into the light and create a system of helping each other face problems then we are already heading in the right direction. We allow drugs to prosper by trying to act like the problem will go away. The only way we can eliminate the problem is by stopping the need and by solving the problem with right solutions.
