France Declares War On California: The Battle Over Foie Gras

President Francois Hollande has defended one of his nation?s many gourmet delicacies, foie gras, in response to the state of California?s decision to ban the production and sale of the tasty product on grounds of animal cruelty.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper of Britain reported that France produces more than 16 million tons of foie gras every year, principally by force-feeding corn to ducks and geese in order to enlarge their livers. Only 3,000 tons are exported, however.

Britain has already banned the production of foie gras but has not yet prohibited their import. Force-feeding has also been banned in Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and Israel.

Speaking at a foie gras farm over the weekend in Monlezun in the southwestern part of France, Hollande said he ?would not let foie gras exports be jeopardized, especially in certain countries, or certain states in America,? a reference to California, which outlawed foie gras on July 1.

The French president said he will vociferously argue his case and ?if necessary, I?ll bring as much as needed to [the] authorities.?

Follow us

?I think they will listen,? he added.

?We wish we could have more of it here in France, and sometimes cannot, due to lack of purchasing power -- I wouldn?t want to deprive the Americans!?

On a more serious note, Hollande said California's ban on foie gras violates the principles of free trade and cited that the production of the delicacy adheres to the strictest sanitary laws of Europe.

?Foie gras is a great French product that is an honor to those devoted to it,? he said. ?[The Americans] can?t defend free trade and forbid a good product like foie gras.?

It is unclear what Hollande can do to repeal California?s law, although he half-jokingly suggested he would send free foie gras to American lawmakers to persuade them as to its benefits.

France remains the No. 1 producer and consumer of foie gras -- indeed, under French law, the product is part of the ?protected cultural and gastronomical heritage of France.?

The California prohibition of foie gras was originally drawn up in 2004 by John Burton, who was then the State Senate president and now serves as the chairman of the California Democratic Party, citing the cruelty of force-feeding the birds to fatten their livers.

"How would you like to have a tube crammed down your throat and corn forced down it? It's very inhumane," he said, according to the Telegraph.

"Any restaurant that serves foie gras is a high-class restaurant, so I don't think they'll be going broke because of this."

The people for the Ethical Treatment Animals, or PETA, takes a similar dim view of foie gras.

?To produce foie gras ? workers ram pipes down male ducks' or geese's throats two or three times daily and pump as much as four pounds of grain and fat into the animals' stomachs, causing their livers to bloat to up to 10 times their normal size,? PETA said.?

?Many birds have difficulty standing because of their engorged livers, and they may tear out their own feathers and cannibalize each other out of stress.?

PETA added that the birds are ?kept in tiny wire cages or packed into sheds. On some farms, a single worker may be expected to force-feed 500 birds three times each day. Because of this rush, animals are often treated roughly and left injured and suffering.?

Stark choice for GOP voters in Texas Senate runoff

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? The question for voters in Tuesday's Texas runoff isn't whether a Republican will likely succeed Kay Bailey Hutchison in the U.S. Senate, but what kind of Republican? The answer figures to reverberate far beyond the Lone Star State.

In an election representing one of the nation's most vivid contrasts between the GOP establishment and the tea party, longtime Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst faces a major threat from former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz. Two months after Dewhurst's decisive win in a nine-candidate primary signaled he might coast to victory, the battle is considered too close to call.

Cruz blocked Dewhurst from the majority he needed to avert a runoff, and his insurgent candidacy has been buoyed ever since by money and influence from conservative groups in and outside of Texas.

Both camps pinned their hopes on getting people to the polls for Tuesday's runoff, which was pushed to summer because the initial primary was delayed from Super Tuesday to May due to a legal battle over redistricting maps drawn by the GOP-dominated Legislature.

"We are seeing a high turnout, which I think is terrific because everything we're seeing is that conservatives are energized and excited and showing up to vote," Cruz said Monday on the Joe Pags Show on WOAI radio in San Antonio. "This race will come down 100 percent to turnout."

At a Houston campaign stop early Tuesday, Cruz once again emphasized the need for "conservatives" to vote, telling them not only to cast their own ballot, but to bring 10 friends with them.

"We are here today because of grass-roots conservatives all over the place," Cruz told about two dozen supporters who stood outside a polling place in one of Houston's most upscale neighborhoods.

Cruz said he heard from voters statewide interested in changing what they view as insider-politics in Washington.

"That's the way the Democratic process is supposed to work. It's not supposed to be a bunch of guys in a smoky room in Austin picking the next Senator," Cruz added.

Dewhurst also planned to meet voters in Houston.

Early voting ended Friday, and about 3.3 percent of registered Republicans cast ballots ? a stronger turnout than expected, especially for a runoff coming so deep into summer doldrums.

Natache Reeves, a 42-year-old nurse from the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Grapevine, said she voted for Cruz because he had former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's support and was less likely to restrict handgun use.

"I love Sarah Palin, and she's backing Ted Cruz," Reeves said. "I pretty much agree with everything that rolls out of her mouth."

Frank Martinez of Dallas said he couldn't support Cruz even though they shared Cuban roots, and despite finding Dewhurst's campaign ads "very mean."

"I think (Dewhurst) has more experience, and he's not a lawyer. So the ad worked," said Martinez, a 54-year-old immigrant who is unemployed after a workplace accident two years ago left him disabled.

The race is being watched nationally as a test for the tea party against well-entrenched Texas Republicans who unaccustomed to losing. Texas hasn't elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994.

Cruz's recent success is drawing comparisons to Indiana, where state Treasurer Richard Mourdock defeated incumbent Sen. Richard Lugar in the Republican primary. But in Texas, the nation's second-most populous state, a win by a tea party-backed candidate likely would resonate even more.

While Democrats also are squaring off in a Tuesday runoff, the GOP nominee figures to be the overwhelming favorite in November to replace Hutchison, who is retiring.

Dewhurst has overseen the Texas Senate from the powerful lieutenant governor's post since 2003 and has been endorsed by popular Gov. Rick Perry and much of the state's Republican establishment.

Cruz is the son of a Cuban immigrant who has a fiery public speaking style that has stirred up grassroots groups.

An Air Force veteran who also was stationed in Bolivia for the CIA, Dewhurst spoke Monday in San Antonio at one of the oldest Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in the country, flanked by Perry and Peter Holt, the owner of the city's NBA franchise, the Spurs.

Retired U.S. Navy fighter pilot Jake Ellzey spoke at the rally, telling the crowd, "I dare Ted Cruz to come in to any VFW post anywhere in the state and talk about fighting."

"Mr. Cruz, you're not a fighter because you've never worn the uniform," Ellzey said.

Asked if that was a fair assessment, Dewhurst said, "I agree with the commander."

"Normally, I've found in my life that the louder you speak, probably, the less of a fighter you are," he continued.

Cruz describes himself as the race's only true fighter for conservative values. A spokesman for his campaign, James Bernsen, said Monday that Ellzey's and Dewhurst's comments offended him as a veteran of the Iraq war.

"I find it offensive to make it a litmus test," Bernsen said. "Ted is very supportive of the military. But this is not something that should be politicized, period."

Pentagon, firm battle over tanks 'we simply do not need'

Saurabh Das / AP file

U.S. M1 Abrams tanks withdraw to a safe position after mortar rounds landed nearby in Kufa, Iraq, on April 29, 2004.

By Aaron Mehta and Lydia MulvanyCenter for Public Integrity

The M1 Abrams tank has survived the Cold War, two conflicts in Iraq and a decade of war in Afghanistan. No wonder ? it weighs as much as nine elephants and is fitted with a cannon capable of turning a building to rubble from two and a half miles away.

But now the machine finds itself a target in an unusual battle between the Defense Department and lawmakers who are the beneficiaries of large donations by its manufacturer.

The Pentagon, facing smaller budgets and looking towards a new global strategy, has decided it wants to save as much as $3 billion by freezing refurbishment of the M1 from 2014 to 2017, so it can redesign the hulking, clanking vehicle from top to bottom.

Its proposal would idle a large factory in Lima, Ohio, as well as halt work at dozens of subcontractors in Pennsylvania, Michigan and other states.

Opposing the Pentagon?s plans is Abrams manufacturer General Dynamics, a nationwide employer that has pumped millions of dollars into congressional elections over the last decade. The tank?s supporters on Capitol Hill say they are desperate to save jobs in their districts and concerned about undermining America?s military capability.

So far, the contractor is winning the battle, after a well-organized campaign of lobbying and political donations involving the lawmakers on four key committees that will decide the tanks? fate, according to an analysis of spending and lobbying records by the Center for Public Integrity.

Sharp spikes in the company?s donations ? including a two-week period in 2011 when its employees and political action committee sent the lawmakers checks for their campaigns totaling nearly $50,000 ? roughly coincided with five legislative milestones for the Abrams, including committee hearings and votes and the defense bill?s final passage last year.

After putting the tank money back in the budget then, both the House and Senate Armed Services Committees have again authorized it this year ? $181 million in the House and $91 million in the Senate. If the company and its supporters prevail, the Army will refurbish what Army Chief of Staff Ray Odierno described in a February hearing as ?280 tanks that we simply do not need.??

The Center for Public Integrity

The cash and the tank. Click to enlarge image.

It already has more than 2,300 M1?s deployed with U.S. forces around the world and roughly 3,000 more sitting idle in long rows outdoors at a remote military base in California?s Sierra mountains.

The $3 billion at stake in this fight is not a large sum in Pentagon terms ? it?s roughly what the building spends every 82 minutes. But the fight over the Abrams? future, still unfolding, illuminates the major pressures that drive the current defense spending debate.

These include a Pentagon looking to free itself from legacy projects and modernize some of its combat strategy, a Congress looking to defend pet projects and a well-financed and politically savvy defense industry with deep ties to both, fighting tooth-and-nail to fend off even small reductions in the budget now devoted to the military ? a total figure that presently composes about half of all discretionary spending.

Vulnerable to IEDs but impervious to Pentagon budgeteers
The M1 Abrams entered service in 1980, but first saw combat during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. That episode indicated that, on the battlefield at least, the only thing that could destroy an Abrams was another Abrams; only seven of the tanks deployed in the operation were destroyed, all by friendly fire.?

In the last decade, however, as hundreds were deployed to Iraq and later Afghanistan, a key shortcoming became apparent: Their flat bottoms made the Abrams surprisingly vulnerableto improvised explosive devices (IEDs). As a result, the Abrams in Iraq ended up being used as ?pillboxes?? high-priced armored bunkers used to protect ground.

?The M1 is an extraordinary vehicle, the best tank on the planet,? Paul D. Eaton, a retired Army major general now with the nonprofit National Security Network, said in an interview. Since the primary purpose of tanks is to kill other tanks, however, their utility in modern counterinsurgency warfare is limited, he added.

Ashley Givens, a spokeswoman for the Army?s Program Executive Office for Ground Combat Systems, said that the Army can refurbish all 2,384 tanks it needs by the end of 2013. Freezing work after that, she said, will allow the Army to ?focus its limited resources on the development of the next generation Abrams tank,? rather than building more of the same that ?have exceeded their space, weight and power limits."

Warfare has changed, Odierno explained while discussing the Army?s new strategy at the February hearing: ?We don?t believe we?ll ever see a straight conventional conflict again in the future.?

But top Army officials have so far been unable to get political traction to kill the M1. Part of the reason is that General Dynamics and its well-connected lobbyists have been carrying a large checkbook and a sheaf of pro-tank talking points around on the Hill.

For example, when House Armed Services Committee member Hank Johnson, D-Ga., held a campaign fundraiser at a wood-panelled Capitol Hill steakhouse called the Caucus Room just before Christmas last year, someone from GD brought along a $1,500 check for his reelection campaign. Several months later, Johnson signed a letter to the Pentagon supporting funding for the tank. Johnson spokesman Andy Phelan said the congressman has consistently supported the M-1 ?because he doesn't think shutting down the production line is in the national interest."

The contribution was a tiny portion of the $5.3 million that GD?s political action committee and the company?s employees have invested in the current members of either the House and Senate Armed Services Committees or defense appropriations subcommittees since Jan. 2001, according to data on defense industry campaign contributions the Center for Public Integrity acquired from the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

These are the committees that approve the Pentagon?s spending every year; without their support, the tank ? or any other costly military program -- would be dead.

Kendell Pease, GD?s vice president for government relations and communications, said in an interview that the company ? which produces submarines and radios for the military, as well as tanks -- makes donations to those lawmakers whose views are aligned with the firm?s interests. ?We target our PAC money to those folks who support national security and the national defense of our country,? says Pease. ?Most of them are on the four (key defense) committees.?

But Pease denies trying to time donations around key votes, saying that the company?s PAC typically gives money whenever members of Congress invite its representatives to fundraisers. ?The timing of a donation is keyed by (members?) requests for funding,? he says, adding that personal donations by company employees are not under his control. He said the donations tend to be clumped together because lawmakers often hold fundraisers at the same time.

More cash at key milestones
During the current election cycle, General Dynamics? political action committee and its employees have sent an average of about $7,000 a week to members of the four committees. But the week President Obama announced his defense budget plan in 2011, the donations spiked to more than $20,000, significantly higher than in any of the previous six weeks. A second spike of more than $20,000 in donations occurred in early March 2011, when Army budget hearings were being held.

At a March 9 hearing of the House subcommittee dealing with land forces, Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, railed against the Army?s decision to freeze work on the Abrams. Since the start of 2001, Reyes has received $64,650 in GD donations, including $1,000 on March 10, the day after the hearing, according to the data.? Reyes office did not return a request to comment; his overall campaign receipts in the current election cycle have been $1 million.

Another large spike occurred the first two weeks of May 2011, a period in which the House Armed Services Committee voted 60-1 for a budget bill containing money to continue work on the Abrams through 2013. Over this period, GD?s PAC and employees donated a total of $48,100 to members of the four committees, with almost $20,000 of that going directly to members of the House Armed Services Committee as they voted.

During another two week period in September, in which the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense handed in its conference report and Congress rushed to pass a stopgap spending bill to keep the government open, the company sent $36,500 to members of the four committees ? primarily the House Armed Services Committee, whose members got $31,500.

The final large spike in donations last year came the week of Dec. 11-17, when Congress made a final vote on the whole budget. During this week, GD?s donations to members of the four committees totaled $17,000.

Along with its checks, the company has been carrying around a message that a cutoff of tank manufacturing work in Lima will harm the nation?s ?industrial base,? using what has become a favorite expression of alarm for military contractors facing cutbacks.

The workforce ?is not like a light switch. You can?t just click it off, then walk away for three years, come back and click it on,? Pease said. Smaller suppliers who exclusively make parts for the Abrams could be shuttered if the Army?s spending stops, he said. GD has also accused the Army of underestimating the plant?s temporary shutdown costs, claiming that the government?s actual savings would be minimal.

To help bring its corporate viewpoint to lawmakers, General Dynamics has spent at least $84 million over the past 11 years on lobbyists, according to Senate Office of Public Records lobbying data acquired from the Center for Responsive Politics. Just in the last year and a half, the firm ?? which draws nearly three-quarters of its revenues from public tax dollars in the form of federal contracts ? ?has spent at least $13.5 million on more than 130 individual advocates, who pressed Congress to fund a variety of military and non-military programs at the firm.

While lobbyists often do not name their causes, those working for GD that specifically listed the Abrams tank, along with other topics, reported earning at least $550,000 from 2011 to the first quarter of 2012, according to the data. Pease described the lobbying efforts as ?education? Shame on us if we don?t go and tell them (Congress) our side, because the Army is doing the same thing as we?re doing, having just as many meetings as we are.?

Relying on special contacts
In addition to tapping its in-house team, the company also hired outside firms to help sway lawmakers? votes, which in turn assigned the General Dynamics account to former congressional staff tightly connected to committee members ? part of the ?revolving door? phenomenon now common among veterans of both political parties.

GD paid the Podesta Group nearly $1.7 million since 2009 to lobby on the defense appropriations and authorizations bills, according to lobbying disclosure forms. Among the more than 20 Podesta lobbyists assigned to the account was Josh Holly, communications director for the House Committee on Armed Services under Republican leadership for six years.

According to Holly?s bio?on the Podesta website, he worked directly with Republican Buck McKeon of California, its current chairman. McKeon is a major recipient of GD campaign donations, garnering $68,000 from GD?s PAC and employees since the start of 2001 ? with $56,000 of that coming just since 2009, when he became the committee?s top Republican. Holly did not respond to emails and phone calls seeking his comment and committee spokesman Claude Chafin said McKeon has consistently argued that it is fiscally smarter to keep the Abrams work going than to stop it.

Podesta also assigned the GD account to two former House Appropriations Committee aides.? One of them, Jim Dyer, confirmed that he lobbied on the tank this year, but directed other questions to General Dynamics. GD also hired firms that assigned its account to six other lobbyists who worked for the relevant committees and to a former Pentagon liaison to Congress.?

?

Pease said that when working with outside firms, he lets them pick the specific lobbyists on the account. But when picking the firms, ?you always look for those people who can get the job done,? he says, referring to his approach as using a rifle rather than a shotgun. The company hires ?a lot of individuals who understand our message, and how to deliver the message, so we can educate the right people, so they can understand our side of the equation.?

The company?s efforts so far have had great success. In April, 111 House Republicans joined with 62 House Democrats in a letter to Secretary Panetta decrying the decision to freeze work on the tanks. Less than a quarter were from Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania ? the rust belt states with small subcontractors that would be directly impacted by a halt to Abrams work.

Of the 173 signers, 137 received contributions totaling more than $2 million from GD since 2001. Giving to Republicans and Democrats was split in half, with Republicans receiving about 51 percent of contributions, and Democrats 49 percent. More than half of the Armed Services committee and defense appropriations subcommittee members signed, effectively telgraphing the outcome of their deliberations.

The first signature was from Rep. Sander Levin, D-Mich., whose district includes the Detroit suburb of Sterling Heights, the location of the headquarters for General Dynamics Land Systems. Rep. Levin?s brother is Michigan Democrat Sen. Carl Levin, the powerful head of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Sen. Levin has received $46,200 from General Dynamics since 2001; his brother has received $43,000.

In a written statement, Rep. Levin said he wants to protect the Abrams because it is of ?vital importance to more than 60 local companies? in Michigan and the difficulty of restarting tank production after a hiatus. Rep. Levin?s spokesman Josh Drobnyk says Levin has not conferred with his brother on the issue but confirms that representatives from GDLS contacted the congressman?s office about the Abrams.

Sen. Levin?s spokeswoman Tara Andringa said that ?based on information on the M1 tank program from the Army, from contractors, and from independent analysts,? the senator supported the funds for the Abrams as being in ?the best interests of U.S. security and protecting taxpayers? hard-earned dollars.?

Both this year and last year, the funds were added to the President?s proposed budget without a specific recorded vote, in what independent experts have termed an earmark ? money directed by members of Congress to a pet project that often benefits their district. Earmarks were supposed to have been banned after the 2010 election, but lawmakers have decided that when multiple members favor adding funds ? rather than just one lawmaker ? it is not formally an earmark.

So far, there has been a great silence on the Abrams funding issue from congressional deficit hawks. Rep. Jim Jordan, who represents the Ohio district where the Lima plant is located and has received $31,000 for his campaigns from General Dynamics? leadership PAC and employees, said he is now optimistic that the Abrams money will make it safely through the Senate.

If it does, the fight still might not be over. The White House, in its May 15 responseto the House budget, objected to the ?unrequested authorization? of funds for the Abrams during a ?fiscally-constrained environment.?? The administration did not specifically threaten a veto over the issue but said that if too many unrequested projects impeded ?the ability of the administration to execute the new defense strategy and to properly direct scarce resources,? senior advisors will recommend the president veto the bill.?

Thread: Maple leaf inlay on workbench top. - Family Woodworking

Some of you will remember that i have posted somewhere that i wanted to inlay some bling on my workbench.

Well this has been on the to do list for some time and so i finallly got er done.

Here is how it came out after try number 2.

Used all sorts of tools to get it this close. Its not perfect, but will do for bench bling.

The wood is bloodwood and i made the inlay around 4 millimeters thick.

After glueing it in i decided to clean up my benchtop to flatten the whole lot together again,. what with working on all sorts on that bench it needed a clean up.

Then i finally got another thing done and tried it out. I been meaning to finish off adding my deadman, only two pieces of wood to add but its taken me years to get er done.

Sure makes a difference, i can see now where a leg vise can play a role and good place for hold down storage.

Never got a shot of it but also secured the wooden cross bars for the bottom shelf. They have been lying loose for a few years while i decided if they were going to stay or not. Guess the decision was made.

So my bench is finally finished at least for now.

Ideal benchmarks/prerequisites for relationship stages - Straight ...

What would you say either in general, or for you specifically, are the ideal benchmarks/preresequites for relationship stages? In other words, what would you say are the major transitional stages in a relationship of two people from stranger to life partner / coparents, and what do you think the prerequisites are for advancing to the next stage?

I'll give my own example, but I'm not sure it's necessarily correct or ideal, which is why I'm looking to you all, especially those with a lot of relationship experience, for your input.

I don't mind those whose relationships are a little unconventional from chiming in about their polyamorous situation or whatever, because that's very interesting and is even helpful in giving perspective, but I am hoping to get the majority of input from people who also feel like a sexually monogamous life partnership is their ideal ultimate outcome for them personally. I either case, I'm looking more for what you feel would be the ideal pathway, rather than whatever pathway you happened to actually take, though feel free to include anecdotes in service of supporting either by good or bad example why you feel a certain way.

Here's my first draft!

Stranger >Acquaintance

Merely requires meeting someone and either communicating with them or participating in the same activity, more than once.

Acquaintance > Friend

Communicate with and participate in activities with on a regular basis.

Friend > Best friends

Be honest and open about values, past, etc.

Best Friends > Casual Dating

Have mutual physical attraction, decide to start dating casually, decide methods and level of physical intimacy

Casual Dating > Boyfriend / Girlfriend (Committed Relationship)

Decide to be mutually exclusive, take STD tests before having sex, discuss the nature of sexual intimacy, confirm that you share similar goals with regard to the future of the relationship in terms of marriage, kids, career, etc.

Committed Monogamy > Live Together

Discuss financial aspects, time together and apart, etc.

Live Together > Engagement

Decide on a mutual desire for a more permanent committed relationship, reconfirm relationship and future goals, reconfirm shared values, resolve any lingering conflicts, discuss and decide on financial responsibilities, decide what to bring to and expect from the marriage, meet families, discuss method of future conflict resolution.

Engagement > Marriage

Reconfirm everything above.

Marriage > Renewal

Reaffirm commitment, resolve any unexpected new conflicts

Renewal > Parenting

Discuss parenting methods, values, beliefs, and responsibilities with regard to having children.

I've been a little vague in parts, definitely would love to hear what other people think needs to be negotiated and decided during the various stages.

Tips for Finding your Writing Voice?Guest Post by Josephine Carr ...

by Josephine Carr, @ThreeKingsBooks

Jody02_06162012_webTips for Finding your Writing Voice

When my writing career began thirty years ago, I got lucky. The young adult genre was just beginning, and the market was hungry for novels with teenage protagonists. This was a boon for any unpublished writer, of course, but the real luck was something else entirely.

By writing a young adult novel, I immediately found my voice.

In reading and mentoring other new writers, I recognize that their voice is often murky, or missing entirely. I?m not the first to say this, and I know you?ve read it all over the place, but here it comes again: voice is vital.

This is no joke. You can make any number of mistakes in plotting, character development, point of view, and theme, but if you haven?t found your voice, you will not be published. (Even if you self-publish, your success will always be limited.)

Voice is intangible, difficult to define, and impossible to teach, but if you have it, everything else you might do wrong will be fixable. So what?s a writer to do?

I have some practical suggestions.

(1) Write in the first person.

This can be instantly helpful to a writer searching for their voice. When I received an offer to publish my young adult novel, No Regrets, so many years ago, it was for one reason only. I sounded distinct and unassuming. This happened despite the fact that my prose style has never been lyrical or beautiful in any way. I am a prosaic writer, with a crisp style, but by writing a story that happened to be mildly autobiographical, and in the first person, I immediately tapped into my natural writing voice.

(2) Read your own writing aloud.

This is such an easy, yet profound, method for hearing what you sound like. As you read your prose aloud, you?ll be able to tell if it sounds like you. When the voice is off, it jars, often because there?s a pretentious quality, or there are simply too many words jostling for attention.

(3) Write from your stomach, not your mind.

By writing from your gut, as opposed to your conscious mind, you will find a voice that is compelling and real. When I begin writing a novel, I can literally feel my stomach speaking. I?m not being figurative or wishy-washy by this description. I mean it. My stomach seems to expand and send out messages. Indeed, it?s possible for me to feel ever so slightly nauseous, or a little squirrelly down there when I?ve begun and then realize it?s rolling along in a way I?d never have predicted. The words tumble out in a flow like water from a faucet. If/when that happens, I know I?ve got it. Let go of your doggone head and write from the stomach.

(4) Write for yourself.

I am a huge fan of story structure and planning out a novel because it will unquestionably enhance the reader?s experience -- I studied screenwriting, and I know it?s been an important factor in my success as a writer. But the architecture of a novel comes after you?ve found your voice. In the beginning of a novel?s composition, just write a sentence or two without thinking about anyone reading what you?ve written. Be loosey-goosey and relaxed.

Your voice doesn?t merely sound like you. Your voice smells, looks, and feels like you. Without it, your writing is like a cake that fails to rise in the oven. Flat, thin, compressed. And what makes a cake rise? Baking soda and beaten eggs, both of which form bubbles in the batter.

Your words are bubbles, and they lift us to create a buoyant world, uniquely you. When you write, be yourself, even if that self is somehow scary, a failure, or imperfect. Aren?t we all?

The first mystery in her new series, The Rabbi?s Mother, will be published in September, 2012. Follow her on twitter @threekingsbooks.

The 'what else' that's new!

Hello there, I go by Passion (or Pash), I've been play-by-post role playing for over ten years, and I think it's a crime that I haven't even heard of this place until yesterday! I started role-playing in AOL chats when I was little, and soon moved onto boards, preferably boards2go, EZboards (anyone here even REMEMBER that site?), Avidgamers (that too?), and Invisionfree. Eventually I moved onto Proboards, but I sort of hate it there, and I sincerely miss role playing the old-fashioned way.

Even though I've been role playing for so long, I think my overall writing - from character development to sentence structure - still needs improvement. My favorite setting for an RPG is a unique/original concept using anime/manga pictures and ideas. I rarely join sites that use real people as character images unless the plot really interests me. I enjoy making characters that are very flawed and/or unusual, or characters that seem typical but have my own twist on a classic 'stereotype'. Basically, I like to explore different character types most people I know/have met seem to avoid or don't think to do.

As for my other hobbies, I used to watch anime and read manga a lot but not so much any more. Not at all, really, though I still read manga a lot and will watch an anime if it seems like something up my alley. I love to read, and my favorite authors currently are Carlos Ruiz Zefon, Neil Gaiman, and Toni Morrison. I also like to go to the movies and baking treats. Reading food blogs like Smitten Kitchen and Honest Food are my new obsessions, not for the food (okay, partly for the food), but for the writing. Also, if you couldn't tell, I am in love with commas.

And... and that's all, folks? Stop in and say hi, I won't bite! And even if I do, I promise I've had all my shots.

Dog Owners and Pets Bond Over a Shared Meal at Trendy Culinary ...

Delicious Digg Facebook LinkedIn reddit StumbleUpon Twitter Bit.ly Email PDFmyURL

Culinary trends are starting to take the nation by storm. First it was cakes and pies that had people all atwitter, and then it was cupcakes. Now the latest culinary trend that has people watering at the mouth has to do with raw dog food.

Woofing Yummy Treats based out of Tulsa has developed a culinary treat sensation that will be sure to be taking the nation by storm. This culinary sensation combines favorite human foods and combines them into a treat that can be used as raw dog food.

?Humans and their pets share a very close bond?, said owner of Woofing Yummy Treats, Sara Timmons. ?What we set out to do is create a treat that can be shared by both humans and pets. Many people comment that they would love to share a meal with their pets, but are unable to because dogs cannot always eat the same foods as humans. We worked to fix that.?

Woofing Yummy Treats offers customers a choice of over 40 different flavored cupcakes, cakes and pies that can be eaten by both dogs and humans. Treats are served on a plate with a side dish that can be used to allow dogs to eat next to their owners.

?Our whole goal is to create an experience that a pet and their owner can enjoy together?, explained Timmons. ?We know how sad dogs can get when owners go out to dinner or to get a bite to eat. Now they can do this together as a fun outing.?

Sara Timmons and her staff worked closely with veterinarians to come up with human and dog friendly snack options that would be tasty and safe to eat. Sara Timmons and her staff work in a closed door kitchen that is used solely for the purpose of developing new recipes and treats that dogs and humans will love.

?We are afraid that our competition might try to step on our toes ? or in this case tails?, said Timmons. ?So, we had to make our research kitchen closed to the public, but we?ve got some great tasting treats in the works.?

Woofing Yummy Treats opened its doors in March of 2012 and has developed a considerable following. They serve approximately 400 customers and dogs a day.

?Spot and I love to come here because it?s something we can do together?, said Samantha Green, a loyal patron of Woofing Yummy Treats. ?I tell all my friends who own dogs about this place. They think I?m crazy till they try it themselves and they just love it.?

Murray relishes chance to impress Federer

Andy Murray revealed he'd relished the chance to deliver a dazzling display for the watching Roger Federer as the world number four routed Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the Olympic Games here on Sunday.

Murray was back in action on Centre Court exactly three weeks after crying tears of frustration following his four-set defeat against Federer in his maiden Wimbledon final and the chance to impress his nemesis added an extra edge to the Scot's performance.

Federer, who was there to support compatriot Wawrinka, with whom he won doubles gold in Beijing four years ago, hasn't always been completely complimentary about Murray.

But the seven-time Wimbledon champion, who has beaten the British number one in three Grand Slam finals, couldn't fail to be impressed as Murray brushed aside Wawrinka under the Centre Court roof to set up a last 32 clash with Finland's Jarkko Nieminen or India's Somdev Devvarman.

"It was nice. It was the first time I will have played in front of Roger, apart from when I've been on the other side of the net to him," Murray said.

"Roger himself will tell you that when he plays and someone like Rod Laver, Pete Sampras or Bjorn Borg is watching you it makes it a bit more of an occasion and a bit more special.

"Obviously I have huge amounts of respect for what Roger's been able to do. So, yeah, it was nice having him come to watch."

Murray had lost his first match since the Wimbledon final when he and brother Jamie were beaten in the doubles on Saturday.

But singles gold is Murray's real aim and he showed no signs of a Wimbledon hangover against Wawrinka.

"I feel like, from the way that people have been speaking to me the last few weeks, it's like the final is the only match I've played on Centre Court," Murray said.

"But I played so many matches on there, I love the court. I love the atmosphere. Today was no different.

"It was great. I always enjoy coming back onto the court."

Murray's only complaint was a constant dripping of water next to his chair which seemed to be coming from the roof as rain lashed down outside.

"I think there's a bit of a leak in the roof. There were a few drips coming next to my bag for pretty much the whole match. Might need to try to sort that out!" he said.

After saving a break point in the opening game , Murray went on the attack and, guiding a superb backhand winner down the line, he landed the crucial first break for a 5-3 lead before serving out the set in emphatic fashion.

Murray wasn't in the mood to let another Swiss spoil his time on Centre Court and he easily finished off the world number 26 after breaking twice in the second set.

92% Marvel's The Avengers

All Critics (279) | Top Critics (44) | Fresh (258) | Rotten (21) | DVD (3)

Never underestimate the entertainment value of the Hulk Smash.

If you are a Marvel fan, then The Avengers will feel like Christmas. Thanks to the merry doings of the director, Joss Whedon, all your favorite characters are here, as shiny and as tempting as presents under the tree.

Ultimately, it all comes back to Whedon: His clear vision for each character and how they might be profitably intermingled; his unexpected knack for action choreography; his funny, tender, immaculately constructed script.

A spectacle in the grandest sense of the word ...

Whedon, a pop-genre magician best known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is a master of viewer manipulation - because he never gives up his own seat in the crowd.

The performances are so well-pitched in The Avengers, meshing with such vividness and ease, that it's tempting to overpraise the good but not great movie that surrounds them.

The filmmakers play a conservative game, not setting out to make a great movie but simply making sure not to screw it up an entire franchise.

Feels like actual Marvel Comics are being injected directly into your bloodstream. It's simply jaw-dropping.

While it reflects a movie culture that has traded originality for scale - one wonders if there's a shred of originality anywhere in the film - The Avengers is grand, throwaway fun.

Yeah, it's all that. A tent-pole cash cow for the studio, a dream come true for fans, and treat for action aficionados, 'The Avengers' comes at you as the first true "summer movie spectacular" of the 2012 season.

Wonderful blink and you'll miss them comic beats in the middle of the finale's mayhem. And what glorious mayhem!

The overlong, stale experience barely raises a fast pulse, as the movie quickly stumbles into a standard film structure and doesn't even try to break free.

... The movie isn't so much a work of storytelling as it is a marathon of wish-fulfillment moments for comic book enthusiasts -- punches peppered with punchlines.

The culmination of four distinct franchises is an exciting and entertaining product.

It's the humor that's The Avengers' strength.

Whedon's clear fanboy glee is irresistibly contagious to the audience, whether the heroes and villains go at it with fisticuffs or sharp, witty dialogue.

Comic-book movie delivers the goods

By the time the utterly routine (and decidedly endless) finale rolls around, Marvel's The Avengers has unquestionably squandered the potential of its premise and its cast...

Delivers big time with everything longtime fans and newcomers alike could possibly want in a summer blockbuster that definitely surpasses the hype.

This too-long adventure is a sensory overload --- complete with loud, protracted battle scenes and hunky super heroes who provide the necessary eye candy. It's also very funny, and highly entertaining.

There is much humor laced throughout the film, giving it an air of not taking itself too seriously -- which is as it should be in a film of this genre.

The Avengers lives up to every last ounce of hype.

It's a blockbuster that manages to please with intelligence and fun. Whedon makes it look easy.

It's all very smoothly done but comes without a hint of surprise or revelation.

Historic Herald Building - Miami International Business Attorneys

Posted on by The Victoria Law Group

Genting thought their casino was sure to be an easy sell to a city strapped for cash and jobs.? However, in the words of FDR:? ?We have only just begun to fight.?? That might be the refrain of a dedicated group of citizens who want to preserve the Miami Herald building as that which greets drunk drivers on the MacArthur Causeway heading West after a night of carousing on South Beach.? The city of Miami has received an application seeking to designate the Herald building a historic landmark, which would prevent its destruction.? Not sure how I feel about this one.

07.27.2012 | Madeline Landis

Many businesses question the value of quarterly review meetings, considering the cost and time required for preparation and execution that could have been spent elsewhere. But experts agree that businesses that invest in quarterly reviews have a greater chance of meeting their goals and succeeding in the marketplace.

According to a Harvard Business Review blog post on best practices, titled Four Fatal Flaws of Strategic Planning (Ed Barrows, March 13, 2009,) number four on the list is: ?Dodging Strategy Review Meetings.? Enough said.

At Communiqu?, we believe quarterly reviews are an essential piece of the strategic plan and value partnerships with clients who share this belief. One example is Tecplot Inc. They invest regularly in quarterly review meetings and have experienced first-hand the inherent benefits. Having just participated in another productive quarterly review with their marketing team, we are reminded of the value. Here are some things to consider:

Why invest in quarterly review meetings:

Think of a quarterly review as a quarter break or time-out in an NBA game. Why don?t the players just keep playing and trying to win? They watched the films and had a plan before the game started. The answer is simple: time-outs allow the coach and team a chance to pause, discuss how the game is going and adjust strategy to ensure the best possible outcome. They do this throughout the game so they can course-correct while there is still time.

The same strategy applies to business. If you only review your success once you execute against your annual strategic plan, you are only able to reflect on what worked and what didn?t. There is no time left to change what wasn?t working. Strategic plans should be living documents and companies should be flexible enough to change course when needed. Changing a plan is not necessarily a sign that the original plan was weak.

Why might you need to course-correct if you?ve developed a good strategic plan at the outset? Strategic decisions are based on the knowledge you have about your business at that time and the assumptions you make about the business environment. And the assumptions are many: the appeal of your product or service, opportunities that lie ahead, competitive threats and/or roadblocks. You can only plan based on what you assume will happen. What actually happens remains to be seen. A quarterly review allows you to take stock of which of your assumptions have played out as expected and to what extent.

Other factors may also affect your strategy that cannot be planned for in advance, such as big events or market changes that might impact your product (think 911 if you?re in the travel industry or the fast rise of the iPod if you?re in the business of CD players.) Also, new opportunities might pop up that you hadn?t anticipated. Are they more or less valuable than the opportunities you targeted in your plan? The quarterly review allows you to factor in these changes and adjust the plan accordingly.

Tips for a successful quarterly review:

Planning for quarterly reviews should not be an arduous task. Ideally, the data should already exist in weekly or monthly status reports. This data can be pulled, summarized and analyzed for the quarterly review. There should not be much new data shared at the quarterly review, but it?s a chance for deeper analysis of what is already known with corresponding strategic ?regrouping?.

The quarterly review should be a broad look at the business addressing large functional areas together, rather than each piece individually (for example, the entire marketing team rather than a PR-specific review.) As such, the review allows you to hear what other cross-functional teams are doing and ensures a greater chance for integration and consistency.

Successful quarterly reviews should also be held in person where all participants are in the same room, if possible. In today?s perennially ?connected? world, employees are often disconnected physically with many working remotely or simply working heads-down in their office and communicating mostly via email even with colleagues down the hall. Quarterly reviews allow the team to pull back from the day-to-day work, and have a chance to think more strategically and collaboratively. And the chance to come together in-person also results in more cohesive teams and a higher functioning organization.
