Israel Military Industries to strike tomorrow

Israel Military Industries Ltd. (IMI) employees will go on strike tomorrow, over non-payment of salaries, after today's talks with management broke down. June salaries were not paid because of IMI's cash flow problems and the Ministry of Finance's refusal to transfer funds because negotiations with IMI employees on the company's privatization broke down. The breakdown occurred despite a recent breakthrough that was supposed to lead to the company's privatization.

IMI's employees claim that, during the negotiations on protecting their rights after IMI is privatized, the Ministry of Finance introduced restructuring of the company even if it was not privatized, including the closing of two unprofitable plants.

Histadrut Trade Unions Division chairman Avi Nissenkoren said, "Without salaries, negotiations cannot continue. Management must understand that this crosses every boundary."

IMI workers committee chairman Itzik Yehuda said, "We won't resume negotiations without salaries for the employees who work for the security of the country. Pig-headed Finance Ministry officials found money to finance the purchase of BMWs for ministers, but cannot fund budgets to pay IMI workers' salaries."

Contacts will continue in an attempt to avert the strike.
