Spotted in Henderson: Google Street View mapping car

A 14 News employee spotted the Google Street View mapping car in Henderson on Friday.? That likely means the company is creating updated maps for its website.

Google was in Evansville in April, taking fresh pictures of streets in the Evansville area (and the houses and businesses along them) for use in the Google Street View portion of Google Maps.

Street View first?became available in?2007 and is now available in many cities across 35 countries. Updating? the imagery is something the company does from time?to time as part of its effort to provide users with the richest, most?up-to-date maps possible.

Google also has steps you can take if you, for some reason, don't want you or your house to be visible on their maps.?

Here's what they told us last spring about what happens once the cars have taken the pictures:

"Once the photographs?have been taken, they go through computer processing to make them?ready for use on Google Maps," Deanna Yick of Google told 14 News. "This includes cutting-edge face blurring?technology, which helps make sure that passers-by in the photographs?can't be identified, and we?also blur legible license plates. Once in?Google Maps, you can visually explore and navigate a neighborhood?through these street-level photographs, moving up and down streets, or?looking around in 360 degree panoramas. In addition, we've also?created easy-to-use reporting tools so that people can ask for images?of their house, car or themselves to be obscured in Street View. They?can simply click on "Report a problem" on the bottom left-hand side of?the Street View image, submit a request, and we'll blur the image."

Google has multiple cars in multiple areas around the world.
