Kiwis say job-hopping good for career - Stuff

The sluggish economy is not deterring Kiwis looking for greener work pastures, with just over two fifths on the job hunt despite being happy in current roles, says recruitment firm Kelly.

The company has surveyed more than 3500 New Zealand employees on their attitudes to career progression and job mobility for its global workforce index which canvasses the views of 170,000 workers worldwide,

It found 43 per cent of Kiwi employees surveyed saw their skills as being in high-demand and more than half believed if they did change jobs they had a good chance of negotiating a better or similar position.

Forty-one per cent said they were actively looking for new roles despite being happy in their current ones.

Kelly managing director Debbie Grenfell said despite the slow economy and the uncertain global economic recovery most employees felt they needed to move on.

"Almost half of all New Zealand employees (48 per cent) believe that in order to develop their skills and advance their career opportunities, it is more important to change employers, rather than remain with their existing employer."

Just 28 per cent believed the concept of a career for life was relevant in the current workplace.

Sixty-six per cent felt work experience with a number of employers was an asset to their career advancement, while just 26 per cent believed they had the opportunity to progress with their current employer. Almost half said their employer was not realising their full potential.

Grenfell said the economic climate seemed to have given rise to an employment market where employees were torn between the certainty of a job with limited hopes of advancement, and the less-certain lure of a more rewarding role.

While the number of Kiwi employees continuously looking for new work was relatively low when compared with other countries, it was still high.

"For employers, these trends really highlight the need not just to maintain strong development programmes within their organisation to retain their best employees, but to also clearly communicate the opportunities within their business for career advancement."
